Bonlieu is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Bonlieu is located at 760  m , about 25 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on the high plateau of Champagnole between the Combe d'Ain in the west and the chains of the High Jura in the east, in the headwaters of the Sirène brook.

The area of the 13.05 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the plateau of Bonlieu, which averages 780  m . This gently undulating plateau slowly descends towards the west. It is drained by the Sirène brook to the west to the Ain . In the north, the border runs partly along the Hérisson brook , partly on the upper edge of the slope that descends steeply to the valley. The 13 smaller and larger waterfalls of the Hérisson are known far beyond the region.

To the east, the community area extends into the longitudinal basin of Ilay with the small Lac de Bonlieu and the headwaters of the Hérisson. This hollow is flanked in the east by a densely wooded steep slope, which is partly surmounted by rock walls. The ridge forms the eastern boundary of the municipal area; On the Forêt de la Vallière , the highest point of Bonlieu is reached at 1023  m .

Bonlieu includes the hamlet of Bouzailles ( 680  m ) on the plateau between the Sirène and Ronay valleys, as well as a few individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Bonlieu are Menétrux-en-Joux and Le Frasnois in the north, La Chaux-du-Dombief in the east, Saint-Maurice-Crillat in the south and Uxelles and Saugeot in the west.

history

The settlement of the region began with the establishment of the Carthusian monastery Notre-Dame de Bonlieu by Thibert de Montmoret in 1170 in the hollow north of the Lac de Bonlieu. The monastery was directly subordinate to the Grande Chartreuse . The area between La Chaux-du-Dombief and Denezières belonged to the monastery property. The monastery suffered heavily from the plague epidemics in the 14th century and the devastation during various wars, especially in the 17th century. At the time of the French Revolution , the monastery property was confiscated. The monastery itself was converted into an arms factory. As part of the fighting in 1944, the remaining buildings were set on fire by German troops and completely destroyed.

The current village of Bonlieu used to be called Petites Chiettes . There was a change of area in 1824 when the previously independent Bouzailles was incorporated into Petites Chiettes. In 1888, the official parish name was changed from Petites Chiettes to Bonlieu (based on the former Carthusian monastery).

Attractions

The village church of Bonlieu was built in the 18th century. It houses part of the furnishings of the former church of the Carthusian monastery, including an altarpiece made of gilded wood and the choir stalls. Only a few remains of the monastery are visible; today there is a hotel in its place. Natural attractions include the Lac de Bonlieu and the Hérisson waterfalls.

With 261 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Bonlieu is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (486 people were still counted in 1881), a slight increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Bonlieu was mainly a village characterized by agriculture , especially cattle and dairy farming, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N78, which leads from Lons-le-Saunier to Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux . There are other road connections with Saint-Maurice-Crillat and Saugeot.
