Monnet-la-Ville is located at 500  m , about 19 km east-northeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the valley of the Combe d'Ain, in the middle of the wide Ain valley between the ridge of the heute in the west and the high plateau of Champagnole in the east.

The area of the 6.19 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. To the east, the community area extends over an approximately 100 m high step leading to the high plateau of Champagnole. On the predominantly forest-covered high plateau, the highest point of Monnet-la-Ville is reached at 680  m in the Bois des Chaumois . The communal soil extends with a narrow tip along the north foot of this plateau to the east to the edge of the Champagnole plain .

Neighboring municipalities of Monnet-la-Ville are Pont-du-Navoy in the west and north, Champagnole , Ney and Mont-sur-Monnet in the east and Montigny-sur-l'Ain in the south.

history

The municipality of Monnet-la-Ville was settled very early. Around 200 graves from the Gallo-Roman and Merovingian times were discovered in the Tertre-aux-Squelettes corridor. The parish church of Monnet appears for the first time in the documents in the 11th century. In the Middle Ages, the place was an important market town that had certain rights of freedom. It belonged to the vice-county of Monnet, the castle of which was on a promontory over the Combe d'Ain (today in the municipality of Montigny-sur-l'Ain). Together with Franche-Comté , Monnet-la-Ville came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Maurice in Monnet-la-Ville was built in the 15th century and remodeled in the 17th century.

After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (173 people were still counted in 1901), a significant increase in population has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1960s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has tripled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Monnet-la-Ville was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road D471, which leads from Lons-le-Saunier to Champagnole. There are other road connections with Montigny-sur-l'Ain and Mont-sur-Monnet.
