Les Chalesmes is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Les Chalesmes is located at 936 m , about eleven kilometers southeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on the plateau south of the Val de Sirod, at the northwest foot of the Haute Joux chains.
The area of the 9.47 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the plateau of Les Chalesmes, which averages 900 m . It gradually descends towards the northwest to the Val de Sirod. This plateau shows a loose structure of arable and meadow land as well as forest. It has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the south, the community area extends over a steep slope, partly crossed by rock walls, on the crest of the Forêt de la Haute Joux , on which the highest elevation of Les Chalesmes is reached at 1113 m .
The municipality of Les Chalesmes consists of several towns and hamlets, namely:
- Grand Chalesmes ( 936 m ) on a hill at the foot of the Haute Joux
- Petit Chalesmes ( 899 m ) at the edge of a Combe at the foot of Haute Joux
- Sous Chalamet ( 872 m ) on the plateau of Les Chalesmes
Neighboring municipalities of Les Chalesmes are Sirod and Gillois in the north, Bief-des-Maisons in the east, Foncine-le-Haut and Les Planches-en-Montagne in the south and Crans in the west.
history
Presumably the Villa Calamoe, first mentioned in a document in the 13th century, refers to the later town of Chalesmes. Les Chalesmes had its own parish since the 17th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
In the hamlet of Petit Chalesmes is the church, which originally dates from the 13th century and was later redesigned, especially in the 15th century. It has a bell tower in the Gothic flamboyant style; The choir and portal have been preserved from the original building.

With 96 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Les Chalesmes is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (266 people were still counted in 1891), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the mid-1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Les Chalesmes was a village dominated by agriculture, especially dairy farming and cattle breeding. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Nozeroy to Les Planches-en-Montagne.
