Chapois is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

Chapois is at 610 m above sea level. M., about eleven kilometers north-northeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The clustered village extends in the Jura , on both sides of the Angillon , on the eastern edge of the Andelot plateau at the foot of the heights of the Forêt de la Joux.

The area of ​​the 10.07 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The western part of the area is occupied by a plateau that is on average 620 m above sea level. M. lies and is predominantly passed from Wiesland. It is flowed through by the Angillon in a wide, partly moored lowland and drained to the southwest to the Ain . The eastern part is characterized by significantly greater differences in relief. The municipal area extends into the cut valley of the upper Angillon, which is flanked in the west by the height of the Forêt de la Fresse (up to 750 m above sea level), in the east by the heights of the Forêt de la Joux . In the far east, the community floor extends to the plateau of the second Jura plateau. Here with 832 m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Chapois.

The hamlet of Garde Bois (780 m above sea level) in a cleared island in the Forêt de la Joux on the edge of the high plateau above the Angillon valley belongs to Chapois . Neighboring municipalities of Chapois are Supt in the north, Esserval-Tartre and Plénise in the east, Onglières , Les Nans and Le Larderet in the south and Vers-en-Montagne and Andelot-en-Montagne in the west.

history

Chapois is mentioned for the first time in the 11th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Saint-Mayeul church

The village church of Chapois (Saint-Mayeul) was built in the 19th century. The Garde Bois chapel, which was restored in 1676, is originally from the Middle Ages. The manor house, built in the 15th century and changed in the 17th century, was destroyed by several fires in the 19th century; the ruins are preserved.

With 224 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Chapois is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (419 people were counted in 1891), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chapois was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Andelot-en-Montagne. Other road connections exist with Supt, Le Larderet, Les Nans and Onglières.
