history

Nozeroy, founded in the Middle Ages, was the center of a barony that encompassed the Val de Mièges and belonged to the lords of Châlon-Arlay. The castle was built in the 13th century. During this time, Nozeroy was surrounded by a fortification belt and granted city rights. In the following period, Nozeroy became an important center of the region, which at the beginning of the 16th century had around 1200 inhabitants and was the location of two hospitals. It was the place of residence of Philip the Good , Louis XI. and Charles the Bold . In 1530 sovereignty passed from the Châlon-Arlay to the House of Orange-Nassau by marriage .

The town's gradual decline began with the plague epidemics in the 16th century. In 1639 Nozeroy was captured and sacked by troops of the Duke of Saxe-Weimar . Together with Franche-Comté , the town came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Nozeroy was badly affected by a city fire in 1815.
