Bief-des-Maisons is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Bief-des-Maisons is located at 930  m , about eleven kilometers east-southeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on the extensive plateau south of the Val de Sirod, northwest of the chains of the Haute Joux.

The area of the 5.79 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the plateau of Bief-des-Maisons, which averages 940  m . It has a slight slope towards the northwest to the Val de Sirod. This plateau is mainly made up of meadow and pasture land. With the exception of the small village stream ( Bief ), which seeps away again after a short walk, the plateau has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The high plateau is bounded in the south by the crest of the Forêt de la Haute Joux , on which the highest point of Bief-des-Maisons is reached at 1144  m .

Neighboring communities of Bief-des-Maisons are Gillois in the north, Arsure-Arsurette in the east, Foncine-le-Haut in the south and Les Chalesmes in the west.

history

Until its own parish church was built in the 17th century, Bief-des-Maisons belonged to the parish of Sirod. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The parish church of Bief-des-Maisons was built in the 17th century and enlarged in the 18th century. In the open field east of the village there is a chapel from the 19th century.

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (205 people were still counted in 1891), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Bief-des-Maisons was a village dominated by agriculture, especially dairy farming and cattle breeding. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Nozeroy to Les Planches-en-Montagne . Another road connection is with Arsure-Arsurette.
