Les Planches-en-Montagne is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux in the arrondissement of Lons-le-Saunier .

geography

Les Planches-en-Montagne is located at 723  m , about 13 kilometers southeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a basin of the Saine , surrounded by the mountain ranges of the Haute Joux, which drop in various places with striking rock faces to the breakthrough valley of the Saine .

The area of the 13.48 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central area is occupied by the basin of Les Planches-en-Montagne. The Saine flows through it from southeast to northwest, forming the impressive Gorge de la Langouette (almost 40 m deep and only 4 m wide) below the village . In the basin, the Bief de la Ruine and two other streams join with the Saine.

The valley basin is flanked in the south by the forest heights of Foncine ( 986  m ) and the Côte du Bayard , which the Saine breaks through in a gorge-like valley, in the west by Les Epinois ( 876  m ) and in the north by the Montagne Ronde ( 839  m ) and the Côte Poutin . Between the latter, the Saine leaves the basin of Les Planches and then flows into the Ain in a deeply carved erosion valley. The ridges, which are part of the Haute Joux system, show prominent rock ledges and rock walls. On a narrow ridge of the Forêt de la Haute Joux northeast of the village, the highest point of Les Planches-en-Montagne is reached at 1061  m . To the north, the municipal area extends to the plateau of La Perrena. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual location, Les Planches-en-Montagne also includes several hamlets, farm groups and individual farms, including:

  • Montliboz ( 685  m ) in the basin of Les Planches, west of the Saine
  • La Perrena ( 839  m ) on the plateau at the northern foot of the crest of the Haute Joux

Neighboring municipalities of Les Planches-en-Montagne are Crans and Les Chalesmes in the north, Foncine-le-Haut in the east, Foncine-le-Bas and Fort-du-Plasne in the south and Entre-Deux-Monts , Chaux-des-Crotenay and Syam in the west.

history

Les Planches-en-Montagne was first mentioned in a document in 1282 under the name Villa de Pontibus . In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the barony of Château-Vilain. Together with Franche-Comté , Les Planches-en-Montagne came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1872 the village was sacked. The area changed in 1973 when the previously independent La Perrena was incorporated into Les Planches-en-Montagne.

Attractions

The village church of Les Planches-en-Montagne was built in the 17th century and remodeled in the 18th century. At the height southwest of the village are the ruins of the Château de la Folle. Natural attractions include the Gorges de la Langouette, with which the Saine breaks through a resistant limestone layer below the town center, as well as various waterfalls of the Saine and its side streams.

With 164 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Les Planches-en-Montagne is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range of around 200 people, a significant population decline has been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s due to strong emigration. Only in the last few years has there been a slight increase again.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Les Planches-en-Montagne was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , especially cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. Thanks to the water power of the Saine, various mills and blacksmiths set up along the river. Today there are some local small businesses, including a sawmill. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Champagnole to Foncine-le-Bas. Other road connections exist with Entre-Deux-Monts, Chaux-des-Crotenay and Bief-des-Maisons.
