The main town Trenal is about 8 km as the crow flies southeast of Lons-le-Saunier , the formerly independent municipality Mallerey is about 23 km as the crow flies north-northeast of the canton of Saint-Amour .

The neighboring municipalities of Trenal are Courlaoux in the north, Frébuans in the northeast, Gevingey in the east, Cesancey in the southeast, Vincelles in the south, Mallerey in the southwest and Condamine in the northwest.

On January 1, 2017, the municipality of Mallerey was incorporated into Trenal.
