Crans is a municipality in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Crans is located at 730 m , about seven kilometers southeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on a slope inclined slightly to the northwest, in the south of the Val de Sirod, through which the upper Ain flows.
The area of the 9.03 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The area extends from the valley basin of Crans (part of the Val de Sirod) to the southeast over a relatively gently rising slope to the adjacent plateaus of Bois de la Chancelle ( 877 m ) and Bois des Chênes ( 835 m ). The area shows a loose structure of arable and meadow land and forest. It has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. At 895 m , the highest point of Crans is reached on the edge of the Perrena height.
The neighboring municipalities of Crans are Sirod in the north, Les Chalesmes in the east, Les Planches-en-Montagne in the south and Syam in the west.
history
The etymology of the place name is not clear. Crans probably goes back to the Burgundian personal name Grado and means something like for the people of Grado . In the Middle Ages, Crans was part of the Chaux-des-Crotenay domain. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The village church of Crans was built in the 18th century, while the bell tower dates from the 19th century.

With 74 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Crans is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (225 people were still counted in 1896), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Crans was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The village can be reached either from Syam or from Sirod.
