Conte is a municipality in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Conte is located at 695 m , about seven kilometers east of the city of Champagnole (beeline). The farming village extends in the Jura , on the edge of a plateau east of the Val de Sirod, above the valley of the Ain .
The area of the 3.32 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the plateau of Conte, which averages 730 m . It is bounded in the east, north and west by the cut valley of the upper Ain, which at the same time forms the municipality boundary. The river has its source in the wooded basin between Conte and Nozeroy with a karst spring (Vaucluse type). The plateau, which is mainly covered with meadow and pastureland, is drained by two streams, the Bief des Grands Chaux and the Bief de la Fraite to the Ain. The plateau rises gradually towards the southeast and reaches the highest elevation of Conte at 801 m . In the west, the community area extends down into the valley basin of the Val de Sirod.
Neighboring communities of Conte are Charency and Doye in the north, Nozeroy in the east, Gillois in the south and Sirod in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Conte, then called Comte , was part of the domain of Château-Vilain. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The Chapel of Conte was built in the 18th century. Natural attractions include the Source de l'Ain and the Saut-des-Maillis waterfall further down the valley.

With 56 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Conte is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (116 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Conte was a village dominated by agriculture, in particular dairy farming and cattle breeding. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are no jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Sirod to Nozeroy. Another road connection is with Arsure-Arsurette.
