Withdrawal treatment is a term used to describe treatment for drug addiction . The treatment is usually carried out under medical supervision in a specialist clinic. In the first half of the 19th century, the term was already used in medical literature and lexicons. Partly also as a synonym for the term starvation diet. The term was increasingly used in particular for the treatment of alcohol addiction , but is no longer common in current addiction support .

In the context of criminal justice, the name in Germany is still used, especially in the forensic unit . The regulation Endangerment of an addiction treatment in Germany protects officially ordered or otherwise initiated without the consent of the person concerned against disturbance by third parties. The term can currently be found in the German Criminal Code ( Section 56c , Section 59a , Section 67a , Section 68c , Section 323b ), the Code of Criminal Procedure ( Section 265a ) and in the Youth Courts Act ( Section 10 , Section 57 ). In addition, there are some judgments on alcohol addiction with subsequent rehab in the German highest court case law in labor law .
