Gillois is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Gillois is located at 820 m , about eight kilometers east of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in a hollow on the edge of the plateau adjoining the Val de Sirod to the east, near the source of the Ain .
The area of the 9.65 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the plateau, which averages 860 m . It rises gradually towards the southeast, shows only very small differences in relief and shows a loose structure of arable land, meadowland and forest. The highest point of Gillois is reached at 958 m on a hilltop near the Coteau de l'Araignée corridor . The only flowing water is the Ruisseau de Combe Bernard , which drains the area to the Ain. In the west, the community area extends down into the valley basin of the Val de Sirod.
Gillois includes the hamlet of Gilleret ( 801 m ) on the slope east of the Val de Sirod and some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Gillois are Conte and La Favière in the north, Billecul and Arsure-Arsurette in the east, Bief-des-Maisons and Les Chalesmes in the south and Sirod in the west.
history
Gillois was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. In the Middle Ages, the place belonged to the barony of Château-Vilain. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The church of Gillois, which stands on a promising hill west of the village, was built in the 17th century.

With 136 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Gillois is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (420 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Gillois was a village dominated by agriculture, especially dairy farming and cattle breeding. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Nozeroy to Les Planches-en-Montagne . Further road connections exist with Sirod and Arsure-Arsurette.
