Cize is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Cize lies at 529 m above sea level. M., about two kilometers south of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The former street line village extends in the Jura , in the valley of the Ain to the left of the river, between the Surmont in the west and the Bois de Sapois in the east.

The area of the 4.19 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The eastern border always runs along the Ain, which flows from the southeast to the northwest and emerges from a narrow valley between the Jura chains into the Champagnole plain. The community area extends westward from the river into the valley of Cize. This in turn is flanked by a densely wooded steep slope, which is crowned at its upper edge by a ledge. The border is on the edge of the Surmont and Chaumont plateau, which leads to the Champagnole plateau. At 811 m above sea level M., the highest point of Cize is reached on the Chaumont. In the far south is the Liège forest area.

The Gerland settlement (530 m above sea level) in the Ain valley on the outskirts of Champagnole belongs to Cize . Neighboring municipalities of Cize are Champagnole in the north and east, Syam , Le Vaudioux and Pillemoine in the south and Loulle and Ney in the west.

history

Cize is first mentioned in a document in 1200. The village has belonged to the Chaux-des-Crotenay domain since the Middle Ages; it was granted certain freedoms in the 14th century. Cize was sacked in 1639 by the troops of Duke Wilhelm IV of Saxe-Weimar . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been around 160 people, a marked increase in population has been recorded since the early 1940s thanks to the proximity to Champagnole. Since the peak at the beginning of the 1980s, the population has decreased again by 20%. Today the settlement area of Cize has merged with that of Champagnole.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Cize was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, mills, sawmills and a hydroelectric power station developed on the Ain. Today there are some small and medium-sized businesses, including a company that manufactures insulation material. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, mainly in Champagnole.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the road from Champagnole to Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux . However, through traffic is routed through the Champagnole bypass. Another road connection is with Ney.
