House of Saxe-Weimar
The House of Sachsen-Weimar (from 1741 Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach) is a German princely house that ruled the Duchy of Sachsen-Weimar or Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach . It was the oldest branch of the Ernestines , who in turn form the older branch of the House of Wettin .
The first Duke of the House of Saxony-Weimar was Johann Wilhelm , the second son of Johann Friedrich I, the magnanimous , who was Elector of Saxony until 1547 , but then lost his electorate to his Albertine relatives after his defeat in the Schmalkaldic War . Johann Wilhelm had in 1572 a division of the state ( division Erfurt agree), with the possession of his house to the duchy of Saxe- Weimar was limited. The family ruled Saxony-Weimar, from 1741 Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach as dukes and from 1815 as grand dukes until they lost their throne in the November Revolution of 1918, like all German dynasties.
The family still exists today, its current head is Michael-Benedikt von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach , a grandson of the last ruling Grand Duke.
All members of the house are descended directly from Duke Johann Wilhelm.
