Swell:

The Ingolstadt – Augsburg-Hochzoll line , also known as the Paartalbahn , is a main line in Bavaria . It begins in Ingolstadt and leads in the Paar valley via Schrobenhausen , Aichach , Dasing and Friedberg to Augsburg , where it joins the Munich-Augsburg railway at Augsburg-Hochzoll .

history

A regional train on the Paartalbahn near Niederarnbach

The line was built between 1872 and 1875 and opened on May 15, 1875. Plans around the turn of the century 1900 for a connection between Pöttmes and Eurasburg were not implemented. Likewise, there was no connection from the Paartalbahn from Aichach to the end point of the Ludwig-Thoma-Bahn in Altomünster (today S-Bahn line 2 of the MVV network) that would have established a direct connection to today's Munich S-Bahn . In the winter of 1922 there was a temporary shutdown due to the lack of coal.

Motorized railcars were used for the first time between Augsburg and Aichach in 1935 . During the Second World War , the route was also used for military transport; In early 1945, however, train operations came to a standstill after a bridge over the couple was blown up. But on January 1, 1946, operations were resumed.

In the course of the 1960s, the number of passengers declined due to increasing individual motorization , and in 1975 there were plans for the first time to close the route. This did not happen, but in the following years some stops were closed and the access offer thinned out.

In 1989, the line between Augsburg and Radersdorf was included in the Augsburger Verkehrsverbund (AVV) and in 1996, with the introduction of the Bavarian cycle, train traffic was increased. At that time, class 628 railcars and locomotive-hauled push- pull trains were mainly used. In 1999, the maximum speed allowed on the route was increased to 120 km / h.

At the end of 2000, what was then DB Cargo stopped freight traffic on the route. From the beginning of July 2002, the Augsburg Local Railway started operating again.

From 2008 to 2012 the daily number of passengers rose from 4950 to 8500. In local rail passenger transport , 1.3 million train kilometers are provided on the route (as of 2014).

With the timetable change in December 2009, to became Veolia Verkehr belonging Bavarian regional train (BRB) operation on the Paar Valley Railway after the announcement of the diesel network Augsburg II by the Bavarian railway company had won (BEG). At the same time, the train service was condensed to a 15-minute interval between Augsburg and Friedberg and a 30-minute interval to Aichach.

In a transitional agreement, BEG awarded the Augsburg II diesel network and thus operation on the Paartalbahn for the period from December 2019 to December 2021 to the Bayerische Regiobahn. In 2018, the BEG again awarded the contract to Bayerische Regiobahn for operation from December 2022 to December 2031 as part of Lot 2 of the Augsburger Netze .

On May 7, 2018, a serious railway accident occurred at Aichach station when a passenger train collided head-on with a waiting freight train.

traffic

Since the timetable change in 2009, the route has been served by LINT 41 diesel multiple units; before that, class 642 multiple units had been in use since 2001 . Scheduled, continuous freight traffic is currently not taking place. It is used by DB Schenker Rail , however, a short, northern section during the week from Ingolstadt with a transfer freight train operated as in Karlskron-Probfeld a freight forwarder is a resident who operates a large auto camp. In addition, from August 2002 the line was temporarily used by oil trains Ingolstadt – Kempten (Allgäu), which are pulled by locomotives of the Augsburg Local Railway .

Freight traffic between Augsburg and Radersdorf has been taking place again since July 2007 . The company Pfeifer Holz (formerly Anton Heggenstaller sawmill), based in Unterbernbach , has had its siding and loading system renewed, so that regular wood transports are now again carried out by the Augsburg Local Railway or other private EVUs such as OHE . Freight journeys can only be carried out in the morning and must be completed by 2 p.m. in order to prevent any obstruction to passenger traffic.

In addition, transfer trips take place over this route. For example, the V 90 at Gablingen station is partially exchanged via this route, for which a V 90 from Ingolstadt towards Augsburg drives early in the morning. The return payment usually takes place on Saturday morning.

Security technology

With the exception of Aichach train station, the entire route has been converted to push-button interlockings and light signals. In Aichach station there is still a mechanical interlocking of the standard design with form signals .

Projects

The following projects are being discussed in order to make the Paartalbahn even more attractive in the future as part of the planned Regio-Eisenbahn-Takt Augsburg :

  • Reopening of the stop Paar / new construction of a crossing station in Paar
  • Reopening of the Brunnen stop (commissioning expected in December 2019)
  • Extension of the running trains to Augsburg-Oberhausen
  • Electrification and upgrading of the route for 160 km / h

According to a feasibility study commissioned by the Free State of Bavaria, the travel time from Augsburg to Ingolstadt would increase from 57 today to around 57 at a maximum speed of 160 km / h, with stops at all today's stations and the planned stops in Paar and Brunnen Reduce 49 minutes. At the same time, express trains with stops in Augsburg Haunstetterstraße, Augsburg-Hochzoll, Friedberg, Aichach, Radersdorf and Schrobenhausen could cover this distance in around 42 minutes. A double-track expansion in sections would not be necessary with this concept and will therefore not be pursued further.

After the two-year transitional agreement has expired, regional traffic on the route is to be included in one of two lots for the "E-Netz Augsburg" tender from December 2021. The relevant transport contract was originally supposed to run from 2019, but the tender has been delayed due to delays in the Stuttgart 21 project and the new Wendlingen – Ulm line .
