history

The Deutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (DEG or DEGV), which was founded in 1898, participated in tenders for routes after the opening of the market and regionalization of local rail passenger transport (SPNV) in Germany in 1996. In 1997, together with Bayerische Zugspitzbahn AG , it was awarded the contract for the Bayerische Oberlandbahn network . In the same year, the majority of DEGV was taken over by the French Compagnie générale d'entreprises automobiles (CGEA) - a forerunner of Veolia . EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg initially held a minority share of 40% . The CGEA also took over this share on January 1, 2000.

The now wholly owned parent company went into the Vivendi group in the same year . Its transport division operated under the name Connex in France . As a result, the German subsidiary DEGV was renamed Connex Verkehr GmbH in August 2000 . In the following years Connex offered regional, city and freight transport in Germany. On March 1, 2002, Connex launched its long-distance service under the name InterConnex . This was the first private long-distance train in Germany, it drove from Leipzig via Berlin to Rostock-Warnemünde. In 2003, the French parent company Vivendi Environnement renamed itself Veolia . The transport division and the German subsidiary were initially still called Connex . On January 1st, 2004 the company was reorganized. The Connex Regiobahn and Connex Stadtverkehr were replaced by new regional areas (north-west, south-west, south and east (and originally also north)). The company headquarters of Connex Verkehr moved from Frankfurt am Main to Berlin in the same year.

In May 2006, Connex Verkehr GmbH changed its name to Veolia Verkehr GmbH , so that the affiliation to the parent company should become more recognizable. The Connex part of the name only lasted on the InterConnex long-distance train, which existed until the end of 2014. The freight transport business, which is geared towards industrial customers, was bundled in Veolia Cargo Deutschland and was sold to the French state railway Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF) in 2009 ; it has been trading under the name Captrain Deutschland since then .

In March 2011, Veolia's transport division ( Veolia Transport ) merged with the former Transdev . The resulting group was initially called Veolia Transdev and belonged in equal parts to Veolia and the French state-owned bank Caisse des Dépôts (CDC). The German subsidiary was initially still called Veolia Verkehr , and it now also included the bus networks previously operated by Transdev in Germany. From March 2013 Veolia gradually withdrew from the joint venture Veolia Transdev , the parent company has been called Transdev since then . As a result, the German Veolia Verkehr GmbH changed its name to Transdev GmbH on March 16, 2015 . In January 2019, the Rethmann Group acquired 34 percent of the capital shares in the group parent Transdev Group. In the course of this, the Rethmann Group brought its bus and train subsidiary Rhenus Veniro into the Transdev Group.

Key figures and areas of activity

Under the umbrella of Transdev, the passenger transport business is managed by the rail and bus divisions. In addition, Transdev is Germany's second largest service provider for the sale of tickets. With around 7,350 employees and a turnover of more than 1 billion euros, Transdev GmbH is the largest private mobility provider in Germany. The Transdev subsidiaries transport around 270 million passengers annually. The company is active in local public transport (ÖPNV) in urban and regional regular transport with more than 3,200  buses that cover around 135 million bus kilometers annually. With its rail transport companies (EVU) in local rail passenger transport (SPNV), Transdev provides a total of more than 45 million train kilometers annually with 415 multiple  units , 22 wagon trains and 7  locomotives . From 2002 the company was active in long-distance passenger rail transport (SPFV) with Interconnex , which was discontinued in 2014. Transdev operated the HKX as a service provider from March 2012 to December 2015 .

In the area of charter traffic , Transdev has been driving for BwFuhrpark-Service GmbH , a subsidiary of the German Armed Forces , since March 2008. Short-term charter orders are carried out nationwide on instructions from the German Armed Forces. In addition, Transdev Shuttle offers individualized small-scale transports for private and business customers in Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

With Transdev Vertrieb , the Transdev Group offers separate sales services in public transport. In competition tenders, Transdev Vertrieb was able to secure the lots for stationary ticket sales and subscription management in the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV). The ticket machines were introduced across the board in May 2018. This initially resulted in considerable technical problems, which were still not fully resolved a year later. Since December 15, 2019, Transdev Vertrieb GmbH has also been operating all sales services in the Rhine-Ruhr transport association. From December 2017, Transdev took over the sale of tickets for the Erfurter Bahn and the Süd-Thüringen-Bahn .
