Company history

Veolia Environnement goes back to 1853 by Emperor Napoleon III. Compagnie Générale des Eaux (CGE) established in Paris . The CGE took over many over the years, e. Some smaller companies and was also active in other industries, namely waste management, energy, transport, construction and real estate, but also telecommunications ( SFR ) and media ( Canal + , Havas ). Leading personalities in this development were the CEOs Guy Dejouany (1976–1996) and Jean-Marie Messier (1996–2002).

In 1998 CGE changed the name to Vivendi , only a French subsidiary kept the company name Compagnie Générale des Eaux . Vivendi's water, energy, waste and transport divisions were merged into Vivendi Environnement in 1999/2000 , while the telecommunications and media division became Vivendi Communication . In 2002 Vivendi reduced its stake in Vivendi Environnement, which was renamed as an independent company in Veolia Environnement the following year . The former main shareholder Vivendi has not held a stake in Veolia since July 2006.

Water and sewage sector

Water supply and sanitation in France

After it was founded on December 14, 1853, the company's business area focused on supplying water to the cities of Paris and Lyon . It was granted a 100-year concession in 1854 to supply the city of Lyon with drinking water and in 1861 a further 50-year concession to supply the city of Paris. Since 1884 the company has been responsible for the wastewater treatment of a city for the first time in Reims .

Water supply and wastewater in Germany

In Germany, the company has been a service provider in the water and wastewater sector since 1991. With OEWA Wasser und Abwasser GmbH , the CGE took over several investments in various cities and municipalities in the new federal states , as well as in Lower Saxony and Hesse . In 1999 the city of Berlin commissioned Vivendi , RWE and Allianz with the production and supply of drinking water as well as the operation of the sewage network and the treatment of the sewage. In the following years, investments in the Stadtwerke Görlitz AG, the Stadtwerke Weißwasser and the Braunschweiger Versorgungs-AG were added. At the end of 2013, the State of Berlin bought back Veolia's shares in Berliner Wasserbetriebe (BWB), thereby completing the remunicipalisation of BWB.

Water supply and sewage in other countries

In 1860 the CGE was commissioned by Venice to supply the city with water. In the next three years Istanbul and Porto were added. In the second half of the 20th century, the company expanded its field of business: in 1958 it was commissioned to carry out maintenance work for North American bases of NATO in France.

Waste disposal

The CGE has been operating waste incineration plants since 1967 . Eight years later, she founded the company SARP Industries , which specializes in the disposal of hazardous waste , and subsequently operated the first European center for special liquid waste. In the mid-1980s, the CGE began setting up the first recycling yards . Compagnie Générale d'entreprises automobiles (CGEA), founded in 1912 and disposing of household waste in Paris since 1919, merged with CGE in 1980 . Ten years later, with the Soulier group , she took over one of the largest European paper and plastics recyclers . In 2007 Veolia Umweltservice merged with the German waste container producer Sulo . Veolia has been one of the leading European companies in the field of environmental services since 1994.

energy

The French energy company Chauffage Service (founded in 1935) and the Compagnie Générale de Chauffe merged with the CGE in 1967 . After the 1973 oil crisis , the CGE began to develop concepts for the use of geothermal energy and energy recovery. In 2009, Veolia was awarded the contract by the city of Hamburg to supply the eastern HafenCity with heat.

Transportation and traffic

In 1980, the CGE took over the Compagnie générale d'entreprises automobiles (CGEA), founded in 1911, and the Compagnie générale française des transports et entreprises (CGFTE), which in turn emerged from the Compagnie générale française de tramways (CGFT), founded in 1875 . At the end of the 19th century, the CGFT revolutionized urban public transport with the development of the tram, based on the urban planning concepts of Georges-Eugène Baron Haussmann . Back then, the tram replaced horse-drawn buses as a means of transport. The CGFT operated the first tram lines in Le Havre , Nancy and Marseille . The transport division of CGE was merged in 1997 to form CGEA Transport , operating under the name Connex from 2000 and Veolia Transport from 2005 .

Since the majority takeover of the private railway company Deutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (DEGV) in 1997, CGEA / Vivendi / Veolia has also been active in the German transport sector. After the complete takeover of DEGV in 2000, it was renamed Connex Verkehr and in 2006 Veolia Verkehr . During this time Veolia Verkehr expanded its offer to regional, city and freight transport in Germany.

On March 3, 2011 Veolia Transport merged with the French competitor Transdev to Veolia Transdev; Veolia initially held a 50% stake in the merged company; In October 2012 it became known that the co-shareholder, the state-owned Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations , would increase its stake to 60% as part of a capital increase and thus dilute Veolia's stake to 40% . As a result, Veolia Transdev was renamed Transdev in March 2013 . In October 2018 Veolia withdrew completely from Transdev and sold its remaining 30% stake to the German Rethmann Group.
