Air Liquide SA [ ɛʁ li'ki: d ] ( French liquid air ) is one of the leading companies in gases for industry, medicine and environmental protection. Air Liquide is a French technical gas manufacturer and provider of related services to medicine and most industrial sectors such as chemistry , automotive and electronics . The company's headquarters are in Paris . Air Liquide employs around 65,000 people in 80 countries worldwide. In 2017 the company, which cares for more than 3.5 million customers and patients, generated a profit of 2.2 billion euros on sales of around 20.3 billion euros.

history

In 1902, Georges Claude and Paul Delorme developed a process for liquefying and breaking down air and founded Air Liquide. The first president was Paul Delorme. In 1906 the company began to expand internationally, first to Belgium and Italy , then to Canada , Japan and Hong Kong . In 1913 Air Liquide went public on the Paris Stock Exchange. After the Second World War , the second president, Jean Delorme, devoted himself to the reconstruction, modernization and further development of the industrial facilities. In 1957, the company began large-scale industrial activities and built pipeline networks around the world to supply large industrial areas. From 1963 the company began its first space activities. In 1986, Air Liquide expanded its business in the US by purchasing Big Three Industries from Texas and establishing additional offices in numerous countries in Europe and Asia. In 1995 the subsidiary Air Liquide Santé was founded, which focuses on the medical sector. This essentially includes medical gases and services. In 1996 the German disinfectant market leader Schülke & Mayr was taken over. In 2001 Air Liquide AGA took over Austria and the Messer Griesheim business in South Africa , Trinidad and Tobago , Canada, Egypt , Argentina and Brazil . The establishment of a joint venture with BOC in Japan ( Japan Air Gases , JAG) in 2003 served to strengthen the presence in the markets in the Far East. In 2003 the Italian market leader for the sterilization of surgical instruments, Omasa, was completely taken over by Salini Impregilo . In the following year, Messer Griesheim's business was also taken over in Germany, Great Britain and the USA. Air Liquide operates in over 70 countries worldwide. In 2007 Lurgi was taken over, which was previously a subsidiary of the Bochum GEA Group. The price for the plant engineering group was EUR 200 million as well as additional costs for pension provisions.

With the purchase of the listed LVL Medical Group in 2012, what it claims to be the largest nursing service and the largest provider of outpatient intensive care in Germany, the Bonitas company from Herford , was taken over.

In 2015, Air Liquide opened a new steam reformer for hydrogen and carbon monoxide production in Dormagen and one of the largest hydrogen plants in the world in Yanbu , Saudi Arabia.

In November 2015, Air Liquide announced that it would take over the American market leader Airgas for a price of 13.4 billion US dollars. The takeover was completed in May 2016.

Large gas consumers and customers of energy solutions in large-scale industry (chemicals, petrochemicals , refineries , metal processors ) are supplied via pipelines . Air Liquide has the largest network in the world, almost 8,200 km in length. This also includes the Rhine-Ruhr hydrogen pipeline .

Craft businesses, medium-sized companies and industry that use gas in small and medium quantities in very different sectors (e.g. food , heat treatment of metals, glass industry or welding shops ) are supplied and stored in liquid form or with gas cylinders or their products are immediately stored generated on the customer's premises.

Air Liquide supplies semiconductor manufacturers in the electronics industry with technical gases of very high purity and with liquid chemicals and filling equipment for these liquids.

In the medical gases sector, patients are supplied to their homes through branches such as Vital Aire and Orkyn. These ensure a supply of oxygen and adequate equipment and coordination with the patient, doctor, nurse and administration. In the hospital, Air Liquide takes over the supply of medical oxygen and other gases, including the anesthetic nitrous oxide . The group also supports hygiene and disinfection measures through its branches Anios (France) and Schülke & Mayr (Germany) and for the sterilization of surgical instruments thanks to the know-how of its branch Omasa.
