STMicroelectronics NV is a European semiconductor manufacturer . The company is registered as a public limited company in Amsterdam but has its head office in Geneva . The company initially emerged as SGS-Thomson in June 1987 from a merger between the Italian SGS Microelettronica and the French Thomson Semiconducteurs ; since 1998 it has been called STMicroelectronics. STMicroelectronics shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange , Euronext in Paris ( CAC 40 ) and Borsa Italiana in Milan ( FTSE MIB ).

The product range includes discrete semiconductors and ICs (standard products, customer-specific circuits and ASICs as well as ASSPs ) for general electronics applications. The main areas of application are the automotive industry and the Internet of Things .

The main production locations are in Italy ( Agrate Brianza and Catania ), France ( Grenoble / Crolles , Tours and Rousset ) and Singapore. Test and assembly branches are located in China, Malaysia, Malta, Morocco, the Philippines and Singapore.

Two obsolete semiconductor plants in the US states of Texas and Arizona as well as an assembly plant in Morocco were announced in 2007-2010.

The activities in the field of flash memory were initially (2007) outsourced to a joint venture ( Numonyx ) with Intel and with this finally (2010) sold to Micron Technology .

On January 25, 2008, the acquisition of Genesis Microchip Inc. , a semiconductor manufacturer in the field of display processors, was completed.

2009 they founded together with Ericsson , the joint venture ST-Ericsson , were involved in the two companies with 50%. This was dissolved again in 2013.

After several divisions were closed, more than 1,400 jobs were cut in 2016 as the company wants to focus on other technology areas with greater potential.
