The Poste Italiane SpA , based in Rome is an Italian logistics - and postal companies . Around 65 percent of the company's shares are currently owned by the Italian state.
history
The origins of the company go back to the “Royal Post” (Regie Poste) of the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont , from which in 1861 the Kingdom of Italy emerged. In 1862 the postal services of the other Italian states were integrated into the Regie Poste . In 1889 the “ Ministry of Post and Telegraph” (Ministero delle Poste e Telegrafi) was established , later called the “ Ministry of Post and Telecommunications” and then “Ministry of Communication” until its dissolution in 2001.
In 1967 postcodes were introduced in Italy .
In 1997, the post and telegraph administration was spun off from the ministry and converted into a joint stock company the following year . The telecommunications sector in Italy was previously handled by companies such as SIP or Italcable , which were merged into Telecom Italia in the 1990s .
Corrado Passera subjected the former, heavily deficient and inefficient postal administration to drastic rationalization measures. After the stock corporation was in the black for the first time in 2001, the chairman of the board, Massimo Sarmi, led it into the top international group in the industry. In 2011 the postal services were largely liberalized and in October 2014 a partial privatization of the company was initiated.
Services
The approximately 13,000 branches of Poste Italiane not only offer shipping services, but also insurance and banking services. The Italian post office now employs around 140,000 people. Despite the liberalization of postal services, the Italian post office still has a monopoly-like position in Italy.
