FTSE MIB (formerly S & P / MIB ) is an Italian benchmark index of the 40 leading Italian public companies listed on the Milan Stock Exchange. FTSE MIB stands for Financial Times Stock Exchange and Milano Italia Borsa . In contrast to the DAX, it is a price index ; dividends are not included in the index. The FTSE MIB (until 2009 S & P / MIB) replaced the MIB 30 (until 1994 COMIT 30) as the leading Italian index on November 3, 2003.
calculation
The FTSE MIB index comprises the 40 most important Italian companies and covers almost 80 percent of the domestic market capitalization . In order to be included in the index, the company must be financially viable, have high liquidity, be traded on the Italian stock exchange (Borsa Italiana) and have at least 30 percent free float . The selection is based on what is known as an Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB).
The index is not adjusted for dividend payments . Corporate actions such as stock splits have no (distorting) influence on the index. The weighting is based on the market capitalization of the listed companies. The composition of the FTSE MIB is regularly reviewed in March and September. The calculation is updated every 15 seconds during trading hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CET . The FTSE Italia All-Share Index calculated by Borsa Italiana includes all companies in the FTSE MIB , FTSE Italia Mid Cap and FTSE Italia Small Cap indices .

history
Name changes
The leading Italian index started on December 31, 1992 under the name COMIT 30 with a base value of 100 points.
On October 17, 1994, Borsa Italiana took over the rights to COMIT 30 from Banca Commerciale Italiana (today Sanpaolo IMI ) and renamed the index MIB 30 . The base value from 1992 was set at 10,000 points. The index was selected on the basis of a so-called “indicator of liquidity and capitalization” (ILC), which was determined from trading liquidity and market capitalization. A reassessment took place twice a year.
On June 2, 2003, the Italian stock exchange in Milan, in cooperation with Standard & Poor's, introduced the S & P / MIB consisting of 40 values , which was calculated for a test phase of five months in parallel with the established MIB 30 consisting of 30 values.
On November 3, 2003, the S & P / MIB replaced the MIB 30 as the leading Italian index, the calculation of which was discontinued on May 29, 2009. Both indices were synchronized on October 31, 2003 to a value of 25,973 points in order to ensure a smooth transition of trading of futures and options to the new leading index.
On June 1, 2009, Standard & Poor's ceded the index to the FTSE Group, which is 50 percent owned by the London Stock Exchange Group and is also the parent company of Borsa Italiana. Since then, the stock index has been called the FTSE MIB to reflect this change.
Index development
On January 2, 1998, the MIB ended trading for the first time above the 25,000 point mark and on March 2, 2000 for the first time above the 50,000 point mark. On March 6, 2000, the index closed at an all-time high of 51,093 points. After the speculative bubble burst in the technology sector ( dot-com bubble ), the index fell to a low of 20,539 points by March 12, 2003. That was a decrease of 59.4 percent since March 2000. March 12, 2003 means the end of the downward slide. From spring 2003 the MIB began to rise again. By May 18, 2007, the share index rose to a closing level of 44,364 points.
In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in the summer of 2007, the MIB began to decline again. On June 20, 2008 it closed again with 29,854 points below the limit of 30,000 points. In the course of the crisis, the volatility of the index increased. On October 6, 2008, the MIB suffered the largest daily loss in its history with 8.24 percent and on October 13, 2008, the stock index achieved the highest daily gain with 11.49 percent. On October 24, 2008, it closed with 19,900 points below the 20,000 point mark. The MIB hit a new low on March 9, 2009, when it ended trading at 12,620.57 points. Since May 18, 2007 this corresponds to a decrease of 71.6 percent.
The MIB experienced the second highest price increase on May 10, 2010 (11.28 percent) due to the decision to set up the European Stability Mechanism . March 9, 2009 marks the turning point of the downward trend. From spring 2009 the index was on the way up again. By October 19, 2009, it rose 67.9 percent to a closing level of 24,425.98 points.
The euro crisis from 2010 and the weakening of the global economy from 2011 led to a collapse in the price of the FTSE MIB. On September 12, 2011, the index ended trading at 13,474.14 points. The loss since October 19, 2009 is 42.8 percent. A recovery in prices led to increases in value on the stock market. On March 19, 2012, the stock market barometer closed at 17,133.42 points, 27.2 percent higher than six months earlier. On July 24, 2012, the Italian benchmark index ended trading at 12,362.51 points, its lowest level since November 23, 1993. The loss since the high on March 19, 2012 is 27.8 percent and since the all-time high on March 6, 2000 at 75.8 percent.
The announcement of new bond purchase programs by the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve , which are basically unlimited, led to a recovery in prices on the stock market. The monetary stimulus played a bigger role in price formation than the contraction of the Italian economy and the situation of companies. On January 11, 2013, the FTSE MIB closed at 17,502.39 points, 41.6 percent higher than on July 24, 2012.
