history

During the Second World War , the British radio technician and captain of the British Army Algernon Charles Holland (1919-2001) suffered a pop trauma in a plane crash over Italy and spent a long time in hospital. In 1948 he founded the company EL.IT (Elettronica Italiana) and took over the sales of audiometers and hearing aids from the US manufacturer Medical Acoustic Instrument Company (MAICO). A short time later he developed and produced audiometers himself and also imported hearing aids from other manufacturers to Italy. He met his wife Anna Marie and they both worked on solutions to help people with hearing loss. In 1950 both founded the family business Amplifon SpA in Milan. A converted bus was used as a mobile sales service for hearing aids.

In the 1960s, Amplifon rose to become the market leader in Italy. In 1962 the subsidiary Amplimedical was founded for diagnostic instruments and in 1969 Amplaid for the production of audiometers and software for ENT doctors.

In 1971, the research center for audiology and ear medicine, the independent Amplifon Centro Ricerche e Studi (CRS), was founded. From the 1990s onwards, a broad sales network was built up abroad. The first store opened in Spain in 1992, followed by branches in Switzerland, the USA and the Netherlands. In 2001 the company went public in Milan and was able to expand further, including in Egypt, Hungary, Germany and Great Britain.

In 2009 Siemens Amplifon was taken over. From summer 2015, Amplifon took over additional specialist stores in Germany. Acquired companies were a. Hörgeräte Wilhelm Böckhoff GmbH, Steinmeier KG and Steinmeier Akustik und Optik GmbH, and most recently Focus Hören AG and several smaller hearing aid acoustic companies. As of December 2019, the total number of stores in Germany is over 535 and is spread across Germany. Amplifon has been represented worldwide since 2010, including in Australia, New Zealand and India. The company currently has a total of 11,000 specialist shops worldwide.
