The Moncler SpA is an Italian fashion clothing company with French roots, especially for its quilted down jackets is internationally known in the upper price segment.

Company history

French roots

In 1952, the French entrepreneur and manufacturer of mountain sports equipment René Ramillon founded the Moncler company, whose name he derived from his home village, Monestier de Clermont . Initially, the friendly sporting goods dealers and instructors André Vincent developed from neighboring Grenoble padded sleeping bags , camping - tents and a padded anorak for the company. Despite its narrow portfolio , at a time when the 'vacationing' phenomenon was emerging in the wider society, the company enjoyed commercial success and the products became known as 'Les Ramy' by customers after Ramillon. The company's logo was adorned with the stylized Mont Aiguille . As early as 1954, the first down jackets , for which the company would later become synonymous, were produced for miners in alpine factories. In the early 1950s, the French mountaineer Lionel Terray turned to Ramillon and had him produce a range of highly functional down overalls , gloves and sleeping bags for extremely cold climates under the name 'Moncler pour Lionel Terray' , which were tested and improved on Terray's expeditions . 1954 Moncler Dauenjacken were as equipment for Karakorum expedition of Italians Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli selected, the first to K2 climbed. In 1955, Moncler provided the down jackets to the French Makalu expedition with Lionel Terray. Moncler was the supplier on Terray's Alaska expedition in 1964. At the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, Moncler was the official supplier of the French alpine ski team. At that time, the stylized rooster , which is still used today, was incorporated into the company's logo . In 1972, Moncler worked with the French ski team to develop a lighter version of the down jacket. a. Had leather epaulettes so the skis could be shouldered without damaging the jacket. With the increasing importance of tourist winter sports from the 1970s, Moncler also experienced an increasing economic upturn. In the 1980s, Moncler changed from a manufacturer of professional mountaineering equipment to a lifestyle brand. What was originally practical and technological functional clothing became fashionable sportswear over time; however, the portfolio was limited to winter fashion. Finally, in 1999, a complete fashion collection was presented under the Moncler name.

Moncler goes Italian

As early as 1992, the Italian Pepper Industries SpA (then part of the now insolvent Fin.Part Group), which also produced under license for Cerruti , took over the majority of Moncler. Pepper designer Remo Ruffini became the creative director . In 2003, Ruffini bought 51% from Moncler; 25% stayed with Pepper and 24% with Vela Financial Holding . As a result, Ruffini adapted the materials and fabrics used , including fashion aspects, to modern times and developed current variations of traditional down jackets based on the company's archives, especially for women. Moncler has finally become a status symbol , both on the ski slopes and in the wintry city, and also a year-round lifestyle brand.

Company key figures

In 2005, Ruffini and other investors took over Pepper Industries and with it the remaining shares in Moncler. Fin.Part went bankrupt in 2005. In 2008, the European arm of the Carlyle Group acquired 48% of the shares in Moncler. The company, which was worth around $ 400 million at the time, was subsequently founded by the newly founded investor group 'Fuori dal Sacco' (dt. 'Aus der Sack.') Since mid-2011, the French private equity firm Eurazeo has been the main shareholder in Moncler for a purchase price of 418 million euros. At the end of 2011 the company was owned by the shareholders Eurazeo (45%, of which 32.3% Eurazeo and 12.7% Eurazeo Partners), Remo Ruffini (32%), Carlyle (17.8%), Brands Partners 2 (5%) and Sergio Buongiovanni [General Manager of Industries SpA] (0.25%). Collections

The main Moncler collection for women, men and children was joined in 2006 by a more exclusive, more expensive designer collection for women, Moncler Gamme Rouge , initially by the designer Alessandra Facchinetti , who was formerly employed by Gucci and Miu Miu , and from 2008 by Giambattista Valli, who previously had worked for Fendi , Krizia and Ungaro and owns his own fashion label. In 2009 it was followed by the men's counterpart, Moncler Gamme Bleu , designed by the American fashion designer Thom Browne , who also creates for his own fashion label . Both Gamme collections were discontinued in 2018.

Moncler continues to work with external designers: in 2006, in cooperation with Fendi, their Spy Bag handbag model was offered in an edition of 500 in the Moncler style. At the fashion shows in Milan in January 2010, Moncler launched the Moncler V line for autumn / winter 2010 , a vintage- style men's collection based on Moncler's archive collections from the 1950s and 60s, which was created by the designer of Japanese streetwear label 'Visvim', Hiroki Nakamura, was created. During the Fashion Weeks in New York in February 2010, Moncler presented the Moncler Grenoble collection for the first time , a winter sports collection for women and men created by its own design team.

Brand piracy

Since the end of the 1990s at the latest, the Moncler company, like Louis Vuitton and other well-known luxury brands, has been confronted with countless and constantly increasing counterfeits of its own products by brand pirates , primarily from China . In addition to selling on the black market , the imitators prefer to set up countless websites with online shops , which often contain the word "moncler" in the Internet address. In return, Moncler has taken numerous initiatives to curb the mass of counterfeit products. In cooperation with international police and customs authorities , the company takes action against counterfeiters and possibly also buyers of counterfeit goods worldwide. In addition, Moncler has carried out numerous UDRPs against online retailers in the past and generally warns its customers against buying Moncler products from unauthorized retailers. Since 2008 Moncler has been working with an Italian security company that offers a technology with which the authenticity of the product can be verified by the buyer using numerical codes attached to original Moncler products .
