The Carlyle Group , headquartered in Washington, DC, is one of the largest publicly traded US private equity firms.

Carlyle claims to be one of the largest private equity firms in the world. As of September 2017, the company managed US $ 174 billion in 306 funds and funds of funds and employs over 1,550 people in 31 offices worldwide. Carlyle is based on a broad investor base consisting of 1725 private and public institutional investors as well as wealthy private individuals from 82 countries.

Carlyle was founded in 1987 by William E. Conway Jr., Daniel A. D'Aniello, David Rubenstein, and Stephen L. Norris. They named it after the New York hotel "The Carlyle".

In July 2007 Carlyle listed one of its credit alternative funds, Carlyle Capital Corporation (CCC) in Amsterdam. In March 2008, Carlyle Capital Corp's stock prices plummeted more than 60 percent after some interest payments were postponed. Carlyle Capital Corp is heavily dependent on credit lines and the corresponding rating due to the high level of debt financing ( leverage of 28 US dollars borrowed for each US dollar invested). In March 2008, the liquidation of the mutual fund Carlyle Capital Corp. announced, as the claims of the lenders could no longer be met by the remaining fund assets.

In 2011, the Carlyle Group acquired the private equity management company AlpInvest (via a joint venture in which its managers are involved). Early May 2012. performed on the NASDAQ the IPO of Carlyle as a Publicly Traded Partnership . In October 2017, the founders handed over management of the company to the two co-CEOs Glöen Youngkin and Kewsong Lee.

Holdings

The sector focuses of the investments are in the areas of automotive & transport, energy & utilities, financial service providers, industry, infrastructure, consumer & retail, aviation & defense, pharmaceuticals, technology & services, and telecommunications & media.

In 1997, Carlyle acquired the defense company United Defense Industries for 850 million US dollars , floated the company on the New York Stock Exchange in 2001 and sold its remaining shares by 2004. Since then, the defense sector has made up less than 1% of Carlyle's holdings. In August 2012, Carlyle took over the majority stake in the US stock photo agency Getty Images for 3.3 billion US dollars . In Europe, Carlyle was involved in the French hotel chain B&B Hotels , the Italian sports fashion manufacturer Moncler and the French cable provider Numericable . The purchase of DuPont Performance Coatings (Standox, Spies Hecker, DuPont Refinish) for $ 4.9 billion was completed in February 2013. In July 2016, The Carlyle Group sold its last shares in the company now trading as Axalta Coatings. In December 2015, Carlyle announced the acquisition of the Dutch underwear brand Hunkemöller .
