Edscha is a German automotive supplier that belongs to the Spanish Gestamp Automoción .

history

The company was founded in Remscheid in 1870 by Eduard Scharwächter, whose abbreviation became the company's name. For carriages were hinges , fittings and locks made. In 1941 Richard Albert Bremicker, a great-nephew of the founder, became managing director and remained so until 1990. Edscha received the first large-scale order from the automotive industry in 1932. A new plant in Hengersberg , Lower Bavaria , was built in 1963. International production began in 1975. In 1984 a plant was built in Hauzenberg . The Convertible Roofs division began with an order for 3 Series BMWs.

A management buy-out of the group in April 1997 led to the transfer of all shares in Horst Kuschetzki, who had been managing director since 1994. In March 1999 the company was first listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. In 2000 the company took over Jackson Automotive Group Inc. , a North American hinge manufacturer. Edscha thus became the market leader in this area in North America. Edscha's stock market life did not last long, in 2002 the majority was taken over by a group of investors around the Carlyle Group and the company's board of directors. In 2003, the remaining shareholders were compensated as part of a squeeze-out . In November 2004, the previous company director Horst Kuschetzki moved to the supervisory board, and Manfred Puhlmann was succeeded as chairman of the board.

In February 2009, the company filed for insolvency for the locations in Europe , affecting 4,200 employees across Europe, 2,300 of them in Germany - the plants in Asia and America were excluded from filing for insolvency. The reason for this was the massive decline in developments on the global automotive market in combination with significantly poorer access to finance on the capital markets. In addition, owner Carlyle had weakened the company's equity base through withdrawals. In 2008 the company had already laid off 700 employees. Further employees were laid off in May 2009 as part of the bankruptcy. Necessary restructuring measures were initiated and the company continued.

In January 2010, Webasto AG took over the Edscha convertible roof systems division. With the takeover, all locations were retained. In March 2010, the antitrust authorities approved the takeover of the body products business unit by the Spanish automotive supplier Gestamp Automoción.

Products

There are the business areas “Body Products”, “Driven Systems” and “Actuating Systems”. Edscha is the world market leader in door hinges and door stays with a European market share of more than 50 percent. The product portfolio in the Body Products division ranges from hinges for car doors, hoods and flaps to door stops and door hinges with integrated stops to completely new door opening concepts.

Edscha also offers an extensive range of products with expertise in lightweight construction in the area of actuation systems, in particular hand and foot parking brakes and pedal mechanisms. Components made of plastic or in hybrid construction are increasingly being used, especially in the pedal systems: starting with the clutch pedal and the pedal bracket to the brake pedal.

Edscha also produces drives for the fully automatic opening and closing of trunk lids and tailgates. Here, too, Edscha is one of the leading European suppliers.
