history

Wilhelm Hunkemöller (1858–1927), who comes from Warendorf , and his wife Josephina Lexis founded the company in 1886 as a specialist shop for corsets and hoop skirts in Amsterdam. At first they produced corsets there in their own factory. In the following years the family business opened branches in Amsterdam , Rotterdam and Utrecht . In 1974 the company was bought by Vendex subsidiary Confendex BV, a subsidiary of Vroom & Dreesman BV. The company name was shortened from "Hunkemöller Lexis" to "Hunkemöller". The first branch in Belgium followed in 1977, and ten years later the first store in Germany. Today the company is represented in several European cities and in the Middle East. Flagship stores are located in Stuttgart, Oberhausen, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Vienna, Antwerp and Rotterdam.

Since August 31, 2016, the brand is presented by the Dutch model Doutzen Kroes . Doutzen has already designed a lingerie, sports and swimwear collection in collaboration with Hunkemöller. Before that, the photo model and presenter Sylvie Meis were the face of the company.

Corporate structure

Hunkemöller operates multi-channel sales that include branches, shop-in-shops, e-commerce and international franchising. The company has been pursuing a franchising program since 1979 . Hunkemöller now has more than 850 stores in which over 6,200 employees work for the lingerie brand. Since the end of 2010 the company has belonged to PAI Partners , a European private equity group. It was previously part of Maxeda, a Dutch retail company. Hunkemöller is based in Hilversum . In 2017 it recorded a turnover of 550 million euros. The company was acquired by the Carlyle Group in early 2016 .
