The "S" class of the Dutch shipping company Vereenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaart Maatschappij was a class of ships consisting of nine general cargo ships .

history

construction

The ship type was built between 1960 and 1962 by the shipyards P. Smit Jr. in Rotterdam , C. van der Giessen & Zonen in Krimpen aan den IJssel and Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij in Amsterdam for the VNS liner service. On December 30, 1960, the shipping company was able to take over the type ship Serooskerk from the P. Smit Jr. shipyard. In 1962 the last ship of the quintet, the Schiekerk, was delivered. The Smit buildings Serooskerk and Simonskerk were measured somewhat larger than the rest of the ships. A special feature was also the Sloterkerk , which was owned jointly with the shipping companies Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (KPM) and Nederlandse Tank & Paketvaart Maatschappij, but was used in the VNS service.

Use at the VNS

The ships were used from Europe on the long-distance routes to East Asia, Australia, East and South Africa. The main cargo consisted of general cargo of all kinds, individual heavy cargo loads were also accepted and significant numbers of passengers were carried. During the merger on January 20, 1970 with the shipping companies Stoomvaart Maatschappij "Nederland" , Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd and Koninklijke Java-China-Paketvaart Lijnen , the ships were jointly owned by the new Nederlandsche Scheepvaart Unie (NSU).

Later career

In 1969/70, some ships at the Wilton-Fijenoord shipyard were extended by an additional container hold in order to adapt them to the changed framework conditions in liner shipping. Some ships were handed over to the shipping company Koninklijke Java-China-Paketvaart Lijnen (KJCPL) between 1973 and 1977 . In 1981 two ships were sold to the Saudi Europe Lines Pty. from Djeddah and in 1983 Pacific International Lines from Singapore and the shipping company Premier Shipping Nav. from Panama each acquired a ship of the series. The remaining ships served Nedlloyd without further sales until 1983/84 and were then sold for scrapping. The second owner's ships stayed in service a little longer and were then also canceled.

technology

Features of the series were, in addition to the powerful drive system with main engines from Stork (10,600 HP) and Smit-B&W (11,250 HP), the versatile loading equipment. During construction, all ships were equipped with conventional loading booms and with 120-tonne heavy lift gear to take over heavy lifts. Further loading facilities after the modifications were two on-board cranes that were used in the midship area for container handling.
