- April 7 : The fairy tale The Princess and the Pea , The Emperor's New Clothes and others of Hans Christian Andersen published in an issue of series Eventyr continued old for Børn ( tale told for children ) in Denmark.
- The American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne publishes Twice-Told Tales , a collection of several previously anonymously published stories. The short prose collection contains, among others, the stories The Gray Champion , The Wedding-Knell , The Minister's Black Veil , Wakefield , The Great Carbuncle and The Hollow of the Three Hills .
- A third - again expanded - edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm appears.
- Heinrich Heine publishes Ueber den denunciator. A preface to the third part of the drawing room .

- The late romantic poem Mondnacht by Joseph von Eichendorff is published for the first time.

- May 17 : The US daily The Baltimore Sun is founded.

- November 18 : The professors' group of the Göttingen Seven submit their written protest against the withdrawal of the liberal constitution by their sovereign, King Ernst August I of Hanover . On December 12th, they are released for alleged high treason.

- The first volume of Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied's Journey into Inner North America from 1832 to 1834 appears with illustrations by Karl Bodmer .
- Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini publishes the first description of the genus Echinopsis as part of the cactus family .

- May 27th : In the encyclical Summo iugiter studio , Pope Gregory XVI. interferes with mixed marriages and insists on the upbringing of the children from this in the Catholic faith.
