Life

Johannes Trojan was born in Danzig as the son of a merchant who was head of the city council for a time and from 1849 deputy of the second chamber in Berlin . In his spare time, the father often wrote poetry that was carried over to his son. The mother died in 1841 and the father soon married again. Johannes Trojan attended high school in Gdansk , where he passed his school leaving examination in 1856 .

First he studied medicine for five semesters at the University of Göttingen , then German studies in Berlin and Bonn . At the beginning of his studies in Göttingen he became a member of the Brunsviga fraternity in 1856 , in Bonn he designed the beer newspaper as a pub guest for two years and in 1859 became an honorary member of the Alemannia Bonn fraternity . From 1859 he lived in Berlin and in 1862 he became the assistant editor of the Berliner Montags-Zeitung . He was an admirer of Otto von Bismarck , from 1866 editor of the political-satirical weekly newspaper Kladderadatsch and from 1886 to 1909 its editor-in-chief . In 1898 he had to serve a two-month imprisonment in the fortress of Weichselmünde for insulting majesty . He reports about it in satirical form in his book Two Month Fortress . After leaving the Kladderadatsch , he lived in a secluded life in Warnemünde from 1909 .

Johannes Trojan has published 31 children's books since 1863, for which well-known contemporary artists provided the illustrations ( Wilhelm Claudius , Rudolf Geißler , Paul Friedrich Meyerheim and Carl Reinhardt ). His stories for young people appeared in Julius Lohmeyer's German Youth and in Franz Hoffmann's New German Youth Friend . Stories , chats, travelogues and articles on the German flora appeared in newspapers and magazines. Since 1879 he wrote numerous articles for the National-Zeitung , only a few of which were included in his later books. Contributions that he made to Kladderadatsch , including political poetry, prose articles and joke poems, could not yet be recognized as Trojan products, because until 1910 no author names were mentioned in the magazine. In a bibliography published in 2019 (see literature), around 50 volumes of the journal are evaluated that come from Trojan's possession, in which he marked more than 6,000 of his own contributions.

His brother-in-law was the silhouette artist Paul Konewka , from whose estate Trojan published many silhouettes . His circle of friends included Wilhelm Polstorff as well as Heinrich Seidel and Julius Stinde , with whom he worked in the Allgemeine Deutsche Reimverein under the poet's name "Theodor Janzen".

Johannes Trojan died at the age of 78 and was buried in the New Cemetery in Rostock.
