Wilhelm Claudius
Wilhelm Ludwig Heinrich Claudius (* 13. April 1854 in Altona ; † 25. September 1942 in Dresden ) was a German painter of Impressionism , draftsman and illustrator .
Life
Wilhelm Claudius was the great-great-nephew of the German poet Matthias Claudius . Alongside Ludwig Richter , he was the intellectual and artistic role model for the young painter's descendant .
Claudius had lived in Dresden since 1879, was a member of the Goppeln artists' colony and was one of the most sought-after illustrators at the end of the 19th century. At that time he had his studio at Residenzstrasse 20 in Dresden- Strehlen . In 1885, Wilhelm Claudius stayed on a study visit with Carl Bantzer in Niederwalgern in the Schwalm. For a short time he belonged to the Willingshausen painters colony .
He dealt with his correspondence with letter paper that he illustrated accordingly, including on January 13, 1900 to his student Erna von Dobschütz , who had registered with him and Robert Sterl (see photo).
In the artist colony of Goppeln near Dresden, Claudius made close friendships with well-known artist colleagues such as Gotthardt Kuehl , Carl Bantzer, Robert Sterl, Max Pietschmann , Sascha Schneider , Hans Unger , Georg Müller-Breslau , Otto Fischer , Emil Voigtländer-Tetzner , Walter Besig , Hermann Gattiker , Oskar Kruse or Max Seliger . Later, the “ Brücke ” painters (artists' association in Dresden from 1905) Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Max Pechstein worked briefly in Goppeln.
Wilhelm Claudius was a member of the German Association of Artists .
