Thomas Burgess (born November 18, 1756 in Odiham , Hampshire , † February 19, 1837 ) was an English author and philosopher .

Thomas Burgess was born in 1756 in Odiham, Hampshire and attended after school in Winchester , the Corpus Christi College in Oxford . Before graduating, he was editing the new edition of John Burton's Pentalogia . In 1781 he brought out an annotated edition of Richard Dawess Miscellaneci Critica , which was also published in Leipzig in 1800. In 1783 he became a fellow of his college, and in 1785 he was called to be chaplain to Shute Barrington , Bishop of Salisbury . Through his influence he received a beneficiary seat , which he held until 1803.

In 1788 he published Considerations on the Abolition of Slavery , in which he advocated the principle of graduated emancipation. In 1791 he accompanied Barrington to Durham , where he was involved in the evangelizing work of the poorer classes. In 1803 he was given the free office of Bishop of St Davids , which he held with great success for the next twenty years. He founded the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in the diocese and also St David's College (now the University of Wales Lampeter ), which he generously endowed and to which he bequeathed his large library after his death.

In 1820 he became the first president of the newly formed Royal Society of Literature , three years later he took over the bishopric of Salisbury , which he held for twelve years, and directed with tireless diligence in his charitable cause. In St Davids, as in Salisbury, he founded the Church Union Society to support frail and needy clergymen. He directed himself sharply against Unitarianism and Catholic emancipation.

A list of his very extensive work can be found in his biography by JS Harford (second edition 1841). In addition to the works already mentioned, reference is also made to Essay on the Study of Antiquities , The First Principles of Christian Knowledge ; Reflections on the Controversial Writings of Dr Priestley , Emendationes in Suidam et Hesychium et alios Lexicographos Graecos ; The Bible, and nothing but the Bible, the Religion of the Church of England .
