Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd

The Dutch shipping company Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd NV (KRL) , known internationally as Rotterdam Lloyd , existed from 1883 to 1970.

history

The roots of the Rotterdamsche Lloyd shipping company go back to 1839. In this year Willem Ruys started a sailing ship company with the main shipping areas Dutch India and the Far East. In addition, individual trips were made to South America. From 1870 the first steamship was put into operation for the transport of ore from Spain and the Mediterranean to Holland. Two years later, Ruys opened a passenger and postal service to Batavia (Jakarta).

In 1875 the Stoomboot Reederij "Rotterdamsche Lloyd" was founded, the name of which was first changed in 1881 to Stoomvaart Maatschappij Rotterdamsche Lloyd (Rotterdam Steam Navigation Co.) , before the company became NV Rotterdamsche Lloyd in 1883 . In order to handle the tramp shipping business separately, the subsidiary Stoomvaart Maatschappij "Triton" was founded in 1899 . Further start-ups of Rotterdamsche Lloyd during this time were joint services with other shipping companies. The Java-China-Japan Lijn opened in 1902, the Java-Bengalen Lijn started in 1906 and the Java-Australië Lijn started in 1908. Another tramp shipping subsidiary of Rotterdam Lloyd was Stoomvaart Maatschappij "Rotterdam", founded in 1908 . Another joint venture followed in 1915, the Java-Pacific Line.

After the end of the First World War, several Dutch shipping companies formed a consortium to share their respective shipping areas. In the Vereenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaarts Maatschappij (United Netherlands Navigation Co.) founded in 1920, Rotterdam Lloyd took over the management of the Holland-Australia Line, in which it participated with three ships.

After the Second World War, on November 21, 1947, the shipping company was granted the privilege of prefixing the shipping company name with the honorary title " Koninklijke " (Royal), after which the company was renamed Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd.

From 1948 KRL added a new joint line service called Nedlloyd Middle East Express, the Stoomvaart Maatschappij “Nederland”, from the Great Lakes to the Persian Gulf, to India and Pakistan. After Indonesia's independence, the cargo volume from this region decreased and from 1957 the local government no longer allowed passenger line services. The shipping company used its last passenger ships there in the global cruise business. From 1960 onwards, the remaining Indonesian services under the Dutch flag were also terminated. The Java-New York Line then led to Bombay. From 1963, the existing cooperation between the two shipping companies was built on and they worked together under the common Nedlloyd Lijnen NV logo . The Nedlloyd-Lijnen joint service comprised 25 ships from each of the two shipping companies. Also in 1963, the trade restrictions of Dutch shipping companies to Indonesia were lifted. In 1967 the lines from the USA east coast to India and the Europe-Africa service ended.

The two founding shipping companies initially retained their independence, but were later forced to cooperate further due to the increasing containerization of sea traffic and the associated need for capital. With the shipping companies Koninklijke Java-China-Paketvaart Lijnen (KJCPL) and the Vereenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaart Maatschappij (VNS), two other Dutch partners joined the joint service in 1969. On January 20 of the following year, all four companies merged to form the Nederlandse Scheepvaart Unie .
