International Brecht Society
The International Brecht Society (IBS) is an international society that disseminates information for everyone interested in the life and work of Bertolt Brecht . It is designed on the model of the Diderot Society planned by Brecht.
history
The company was founded in 1970. One of the founding members was the Brecht specialist John Willett . The IBS has published a yearbook on a regular basis since 1971. The first three volumes appeared in German under the title Brecht heute . They came out by the Athenaeum publishing house . Volumes 4 to 10 were published by Suhrkamp Verlag as Das Brecht-Jahrbuch . The yearbook has been published in the USA since 1982 and contains articles in German and English. Volumes 11 to 13 were published by Wayne State University Press, and the later by the University of Wisconsin Press. A large part of the articles can now also be read online.
IBS also regularly organizes symposia on the subject of Brecht. For example, an event with the title Brecht in / and Asia took place in May 2010 at the University of Hawaii , in 2006 the topic of Brecht and death was illuminated in Augsburg and in 2003, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the rise and fall of the city of Mahagonny , it was held Symposium held in Berlin .
IBS works with various other institutions. So z. B. in cooperation with the Bertolt Brecht archive at the Academy of the Arts in Berlin a bibliography of the works of Brecht published in English translation.
The president of the company is Hans-Thies Lehmann .
