Blue funnel line

The Menestheus of the Blue Funnel Line

The Blue Funnel Line ( BFL ) ( German: Blue Chimney Line ) was a British shipping company based in Liverpool . It mainly operated liner services to East Asia , but also to Australia , New Zealand , Canada and the United States . The shipping company was at times one of the largest in the world.

history

In 1865, Alfred Holt founded the company Alfred Holt & Co. to set up a liner service with screw steamers to transport freight and passengers to East Asia. A short time later, these activities were carried out in the Ocean Steamship Company Ltd. summarized. The chimneys of the ships were blue with a black cap, hence the name Blue Funnel Line , and in German usage the name Holt Line became established . Since Alfred Holt was a great admirer of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey , all ships of the shipping company were named after characters from these epics .

The shipping company developed brilliantly under Alfred Holt's drive. It was still the time of the great clippers when Holt's steamers began to sail the seas. But Holt correctly recognized that the time for the sailing ships was up and the future belonged to the steamship , and here, too, Holt made the right decision in favor of the screw drive. The route to East Asia initially ran from Liverpool via Cape Town , Penang , Singapore , Hong Kong and Shanghai to Yokohama . With the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, the circumnavigation of South Africa was canceled and the ships now sailed through the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal to East Asia.

The shipping company's first ships were the three sisters Agamemnon (I), Ajax (I) and Achilles (I). They were the first modern liner cargo ships; they were equipped with a compound steam engine and designed for regular service with general cargo and 40 passengers between Europe and China. The ships were built by the Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Greenock , which in the following years, along with Hawthorn, Leslie & Co. from Newcastle , built most of the ships for the line. Until 1914 whole series of ships were continuously put into service without interruption, mainly for freight transport. The size of the ships increased slowly from 2200 GRT to over 10,000 GRT. The Blue Funnel Line became one of the largest shipping companies in the world.

1923 'NSMO' regular service

In 1891 Holt bought the Nederlandsche Stoomvaart Maatschappij "Oceaan" ( NSMO ), based in Amsterdam , and continued to operate it as a direct Blue Funnel subsidiary. In 1896, Holt founded the East India Ocean Steamship Company based in Singapore, which was sold to Norddeutscher Lloyd in 1899 . In 1902, Holt acquired the Glasgow- based China Mutual Steam Navigation Company and, like NSMO, continued to run it as a direct Blue Funnel subsidiary. In 1910 the shipping company put its first passenger ships into service, the sisters Aeneas (I), Ascanius (II) and Anchises (III), each measured at 10,049 GRT, followed by the two 14,000-tonne Nestor (III) and Ulysses (IV ).

In the meantime, the line network had been expanded. In 1896 the shipping company set up a service from Singapore via Batavia to Fremantle (Australia). In 1901 the service from Europe to Australia followed , this route ran from Glasgow via Liverpool , Cape Town to Fremantle, Adelaide , Melbourne and Sydney . In 1902 the transpacific service was added from East Asia to the west coast of North America ( Vancouver , San Francisco , etc.). In 1915, the newly opened Panama Canal was added to the line network and a direct connection from New York to East Asia was established.

On the eve of the First World War , the fleet of the Blue Funnel Line consisted of 69 ships with 470,000 GRT, plus the shipping companies Indra Line and Knight Line were bought up in 1914 . The war that soon broke out meant heavy losses for the shipping company, mainly due to German submarines .

After the war, the rebuilding of the fleet began immediately and by the beginning of the 1930s 28 new ships were put into service. These included other passenger ships, the quartet, which was put into service from 1923 to 1924 - Sarpedon (IV), Patroclus (III), Hector (IV) and Antenor (III) - with 11,446 GRT each measured for the East Asia service. But the bulk were cargo ships to compensate for the war losses, including the first ships with diesel engines .

In 1933, the Blue Funnel Line acquired the Glen Line and Shire Line shipping companies from the fund of the Royal Mail Group, which went bankrupt in 1931, and the Royal Mail share in the important British shipping company Elder Dempster & Company . With these acquisitions, the shipping company held one of the top positions among shipping companies, but at the same time had to contend with the effects of the global economic crisis of 1929.

The situation slowly began to improve in the mid-1930s, but the Second World War , which broke out in 1939, interrupted this positive development and again brought heavy ship losses: in addition to numerous freighters, a large part of the passenger ship tonnage was lost, and with it many hundreds of human lives.

Post-war development

Once again, the shipping company had to build its fleet from scratch. The ship's losses were initially offset by the purchase of a number of standard freighters of the Liberty , Victory and Empire types. In the course of the 1950s and 1960s, large series of cargo ships came into service again. The basis of the reconstruction was the A-Class comprising 27 ships . From 1949 to 1951 the shipping company also put four P-Class and H-Class ships into operation for mixed freight and passenger service to the Far East and Australia - all of them had around 10,000 GRT and offered 35 passengers a place for freight transport but also with these units the greater importance.

The situation on the world market changed in the course of the 1960s. In addition to the aircraft , which made life difficult for the passenger ship, the beginning of containerization brought about major changes. Since the existing ships were only suitable for the transport of containers to a very limited extent, the shipping company, in cooperation with Glen Line, commissioned seven semi-container ships of the Priam class , which made great financial efforts necessary. Even for the Blue Funnel Line, this could not be managed alone, which is why a partner had to be found. In 1967 the Ocean Steamship Company merged with Elder, Dempster Line to form Ocean Transport & Trading Co. ( OT&T ). The Holt family left the company in 1966 after more than 100 years; George Palmer Holt was their last representative in the company's management. But even under OT&T management, the shipping company's old colors were retained. The last ship that was planned and put into service under the aegis of Holt was the Centaur (III) from 1964, equipped for freight transport, but also for 190 passengers, which even had a large swimming pool.

Decline

From the end of the 1960s, large series of container ships, such as the Encounter Bay class or Liverpool Bay class, were put into service through the participation in the joint shipping company Overseas Containers Limited (OCL) , and from the mid-1970s their own Blue Funnels came into service -Container ship series added. In addition, Blue Funnel diversified its fleet with the purchase of bulk carriers ("Bulk Carrier"), crude oil tankers ("Crude Oil Carrier") and, with the fifth Nestor, a liquid gas tanker ("LNG Carrier"), which was, however, still oversized for its time . However, sales fell more and more, especially in the 1980s, and in 1989 all ships were sold, as were the subsidiary shipping companies Elder, Dempster and Glen Line. OT&T then turned to other business areas in which the company is still active today.

today

What remains of the Blue Funnel Line and the Holt family today is nothing more than the names and the memory of a large, world-famous and very successful British shipping company that was one of the most important in the world.

There is a small shipping company in Southampton that bears the old name.
