The Royal Mail Line Ltd. ( RML ) was a British shipping company based in London . It operated a very successful liner service to South America and the Caribbean .

history

In 1841 the company was founded as the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company to operate a liner service from London to the West Indies ( Caribbean ). The shipping company's ships were easy to recognize because they were all named after rivers. In 1850 the Royal Mail Line expanded its liner service to South America . The line connection was Southampton - Vigo - Lisbon - Las Palmas - Rio de Janeiro / Santos - Montevideo and Buenos Aires . The shipping company rose quickly and became one of the UK's most successful shipping companies.

After 1880 the Royal Mail Line had to struggle with increasing financial difficulties. Over time, the competition on the South American route had become increasingly fierce. From 1870 onwards, more and more new companies started using this service, such as Hamburg Süd and the French shipping companies Compagnie de Chargeurs Réunis and Société Générale de Transport Maritimes , but also competition from their own country in the form of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company (founded in 1838) or the shipping company Lamport & Holt was troubled by the RML. It took the company twenty years to stabilize again.

In 1906 Sir Owen Philipps , who later became Lord Kylsant, became the new General Manager of the Royal Mail Line and with him the company began an unprecedented rise. Many British shipping companies were bought up in quick succession, the Shire Line in 1907 , the Pacific Steam Navigation Company in 1910 , the Union-Castle Line in 1912 and the Nelson Line in 1913, plus a share in the Elder Dempster Line and the Glen Line . In 1914 the Royal Mail Group was one of the most influential shipping companies in the world.

In 1920 the Royal Mail opened a number of new line connections, and from 1920 London, along with Southampton, became the general starting point for all overseas connections. In 1921 the company opened a trans-Pacific service with the following connection: London / Southampton - West Indies ( Caribbean ) - Colombia - Panama - US Pacific ports - Vancouver . In 1927 the Royal Mail took control of the White Star Line . The company was at the height of its economic development.

In 1931, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company had during the Great Depression of 1929 bankruptcy and Lord Kylsant was imprisoned. After a transition phase, the company was renamed Royal Mail Line Ltd. reorganized and formed a network with Pacific Steam Navigation Co. ( RML / PSNCo Group ). The Union-Castle Line, Elder Dempster & Company and the White Star Line became independent again from the subsidiary shipping companies , Shire Line and Glen Line were sold to the Blue Funnel Line (Alfred Holt & Co.). The ships of the Nelson Line were transferred to the Royal Mail Line and the shipping company was dissolved. In 1935 the Furness, Withy Group acquired a 50% stake in RML / PSNCo.

In 1965 Furness, Withy & Company acquired the remaining 50%, but the Royal Mail remained largely independent for the time being. In 1970 all ships of the PSNCo were transferred to the Royal Mail Line, PSNCo remains active as their manager.

In 1980 Furness, Withy was bought up by the Hong Kong Chinese Tung Chao Yung and reorganized in the course of the 1980s. In 1984 the third Andes was the last newbuild for the shipping company and in 1985 all ships were transferred to Shaw, Savill & Albion , a shipping company within the Furness, Withy Group. The Royal Mail Line ceased to exist as an active company.

Since 1990, the name rights to the Royal Mail Line have been owned by the German shipping company Hamburg Süd .
