Nelson Line

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nelson Line was a British shipping company based in Liverpool that ran a liner service to South America . The official name was Nelson Steam Navigation Company Ltd.

history

Nelson Line was founded in 1880, with headquarters in Liverpool . It operated a combined passenger and cargo service to South America. The ships of the shipping company could be recognized by a red chimney with white-black-white ribbons below the black cap. All of their ship names began with the word "Highland".

The original route ran from Liverpool to Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires ; the freight service was clearly in the foreground. In 1910, the shipping company opened another service that focused on passenger transport. This service started in London and ran via Boulogne , La Coruña and Vigo to Montevideo and Buenos Aires. In 1913 the Nelson Line was bought up by the Royal Mail Group.

The Royal Mail Group went bankrupt in 1932 due to the Great Depression of 1929 and was renamed Royal Mail Line Ltd. (RML) newly founded. The Nelson Line was now part of this company and their ships were transferred to the RML, with which the Nelson Line ceased to exist.
