The Amazon (II) was a 1906 commissioned passenger ship of the British shipping company Royal Mail Line , which was used in passenger and mail traffic from Great Britain to South America . On March 15, 1918, the Amazon was sunk by a German submarine off the Northern Irish coast.
history
The 10,037 GRT steamship Amazon was built at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast and was the first in a series of four sister ships. The others were the Araguaya (1906), the Avon (III) (1907) and the Asturias (1908). Except for the Araguaya , which was built by Workman, Clark & Company , all ships in this series were built by Harland & Wolff. The Amazon had a chimney, two masts and two propellers . It was powered by a four-cylinder quadruple expansion steam engine that developed 875 hp. The top speed was 16 knots.
The Amazon was launched on February 24, 1906 and completed on June 5, 1906. In the following years she served the passenger and mail service from England to South America. On March 14, 1918, the Amazon ran with 24 passengers on board in Liverpool for another crossing to Buenos Aires and Río de la Plata . Heavy fog forced the crew to travel at a slow speed. The ship was following a zigzag course when it was hit by a torpedo from U 110 (Corvette Captain Karl Kroll) about 30 miles northwest of Malin Head on the coast of County Donegal in Northern Ireland at 9:30 a.m. on March 15 . The torpedo detonated in compartment No. 4, in which the coal bunkers were located.
15 minutes after the results decreased the Amazon in position 55 ° 49 ' N , 8 ° 6' W . Passengers and crew were rescued by the destroyer Moresby . The destroyer also sank the submarine with depth charges and took the nine survivors of the 48-person crew on board. Corvette Captain Kroll was not among the rescued. The Amazon was the largest ship sunk by U 110 .
