The ship class , known as the Priam class or Super P's , is a series of eight motor ships operated by the British shipping companies Blue Funnel Line and Glen Line . The express freighter series represents their last draft of a conventional general cargo ship before the merger of the parent company Ocean Steamship Company with Elder Dempster & Company to form Ocean Transport & Trading Co. (OT&T) and the subsequent conversion of the shipping companies to container ships .

history

Five units of the series of this ship type were built at the Vickers Armstrongs Shipbuilders shipyard in High Walker / Newcastle upon Tyne , but the two ships Pembrokeshire and Glenalmond were built due to delivery problems at the Japanese shipyard Mitsubishi Heavy Industries , the Glenfinlas at the shipyard John Brown & Company in Clydebank . Due to months of delays at the British shipyards, which were involved in labor disputes, the two ships ordered in Japan were among the first to be delivered. This, in turn, led to the fact that the six Priam- class ships became the last ships of the Blue Funnel Line ever ordered in Great Britain. Another piece of the mosaic in the then progressive decline of the British shipbuilding industry. The lead ship of the class was the Priam, launched on January 5, 1966 . It was delivered seven and a half months later than contractually agreed in November 1966. The Glenalmond became the first ship of the class to be completed in September 1966, although Mitsubishi began building it later. The end of the class formed the end of 1967 handed over Radnorshire . Four Super-P's each came into motion for the Blue Funnel Line and the Glen Line.

Another tradition of the shipping company came to an end with the Super-P's , when the former Glenalmond was brought under the British flag as the Patroclus as the last Dutch-flagged Blue Funnel ship.

The Ocean Steamship Company hoped to achieve an improvement in the profitability of the liner service to the Far East and to catch up with HAPAG , which also has a service, through the concept of the fast freighters, which, with their high speed of 21 knots, enabled a considerable reduction in travel times to East Asia and by the end of 1964 had already put the first of seven similarly designed express freighters of the Westfalia class into service.

Even at the start of construction of the Priam class, the change in long-distance liner traffic began to become clear with the introduction of the container. This led to the fact that the first container ships began serving East Asia in the early 1970s. The shipping company Hapag-Lloyd, for example, put its first container ships into service for the East Asian service in 1972/1973.

Although attempts were made to convert the Super-P's to semi-container ships, they were soon no longer competitive. The first four units were sold en bloc to the Hong Kong shipowner CYTung in 1978. The rest of the ships followed until 1983. Some of the second-hand units were also converted to semi-container ships, but six years later all but one ship had been scrapped again. Only the former Pembrokeshire achieved a relatively long service life of 28 years as Phrontis .
