Location and economy

Krimpen aan den IJssel is located about eight km east of Rotterdam in the Polder Krimpenerwaard, north of the municipality of Nederlek . The village owes its name to its location on a curve ( Dutch krimp ) on the Dutch Issel , at the confluence of this arm of the river with the Lek / Noord arm of the Rhine . A good road connects it to Rotterdam, where the nearest rail connection is.

The village is home to many commuters who work in Rotterdam and for that purpose it expanded a lot after about 1975. But Krimpen aan den IJssel also has a lot of business itself, including a. Ship repair yards, construction companies, metal processing factories, trading companies, etc. Agriculture in the hinterland is also important.

history

Around 1130 the settlement of Crempene was built on a bend in the river, which split into Krimpen aan the IJssel and Krimpen aan de Lek in 1277 . Around 1430, after the flood damage of 1421 had been repaired, a still existing polder administration (“Hoogheemradschap”) was brought into being by Philip the Good . In the 16th century people began to make bricks from the clay that was very suitable for this purpose. Hemp was also grown up to around 1800 : not as it is nowadays for drug use , but to make rope for sailing ships from the fibers in Reeperbahnen .

When the place was not spared by the storm surge of February 1, 1953, the first project of the Delta Works was a storm surge barrier in the Dutch IJssel. This structure was finished in 1958.

Attractions

There are some monumental farms along the IJsseldeich. One of them, Crimpenerhof (built in the 17th and 18th centuries) is set up as a local museum.
