history
Maassluis was part of Maasland, which is now a village in the municipality of Midden-Delfland , around 1600 . Today's town center was built around 1602 on a small, artificial island that was built as a redoubt in the war of liberation against the Spanish . The place, which never received official city rights , lived from fishing in the 17th and 18th centuries and from shipping between 1800 and around 1970. The tugboat trade in Maassluis was particularly famous. These companies, such as Smit-Tak, and Wijsmuller (now part of the Danish Mærsk Line ) have now moved to another location.
The Dutch writer Maarten 't Hart was born in Maassluis on November 25, 1944 . His works are also read in German translation.
Attractions
The "Great Church" (built in 1602) stands out in the small town center. Inside this church there is an organ from 1733 by Redolph Garrelts , a pupil of Arp Schnitger .
In the city museum there is interesting information about Maarten 't Hart as well as information about the city's history. There is also the museum about tugboat transport (Nationaal Sleepvaartmuseum) . The old steamship “Furie”, a tugboat built in 1916, is located in the harbor and can be used for a tour in summer.
