The Europoort is an approximately 3,700 hectare harbor and industrial area and forms part of the port of Rotterdam . Together with the Botlek, an area with a similar use further east, the Europoort is the largest port for petrochemicals in the world. The port of Rotterdam itself was the largest seaport in the world until 2004 and has since been by far the largest in Europe.

location

The Europoort extends over 40 kilometers from Rotterdam to the mouth of the Meuse in the North Sea . It is located south of the Nieuwe Waterweg at the mouth of the Caland Canal in the North Sea.

history

The Europoort was created between 1958 and 1964 when the island of Rozenburg was largely excavated. In addition to the 400-inhabitant village of Blankenburg and numerous farms, the De Beer bird sanctuary also had to give way.
