The Hartel Canal is a canal in Europoort . The canal connects the Oude Maas with the Hartelhaven in the area of the deep water port Maasvlakte . The canal is 24 kilometers long and classified as class VIc. It was created between 1962 and 1973.

The Hartelkanaal is mainly used by pusher shipping, which transports ores and coal for the German steel industry. The transshipment companies there are the Europees Massagoed Overslagbedrijf and the Ertsoverslagbedrijf Europoort .

history

The Hartel Canal was designed for inland navigation, while the Caland Canal, which runs parallel, was intended for sea transport. The Hartel Canal was separated from the Old Maas by the Hartel lock, making it a freshwater canal without tides. There was a connection between the two canals for inland navigation via the Rosenburg lock. At the end of 1997 the Beerdam between the Beerkanaal in Europoort and the Hartelkanaal was breached and the Hartel locks opened. The Hartel Canal is now a brackish water canal with tidal influence. To protect the area behind against storm surges, a barrier gate, the Hartel storm surge barrier , was built near Spijkenisse ; it has the same function as the Maeslant storm surge barrier .
