Khalid Boulahrouz [ χalid bula (h) ˈruːz ] (born December 28, 1981 in Maassluis ) is a former Dutch football player .

Career

society

As a youth, Boulahrouz was active at Ajax Amsterdam and played for the RKC Waalwijk in the Dutch Eredivisie from 2001 .

From 2004 to 2006 the defender wore the Hamburger SV jersey . There the son of Moroccan immigrants quickly became a crowd favorite thanks to his combative qualities. In his first Bundesliga season, the “ cannibal ”, as he is known because of his aggressive style of play, played 24 games for HSV and scored one goal.

At the beginning of the 2006/2007 season, he moved to Chelsea for around 13 million euros . During this move, he got into negative headlines because he allegedly faked a serious injury in the HSV Champions League qualifier against CA Osasuna in order not to play a European Cup game for HSV and thus to be eligible to play for Chelsea FC in this competition. At Chelsea, however, due to the higher competition , he was not as successful as at HSV , he often sat on the bench or was completely removed from the squad.

For the 2007/08 season he was loaned to Sevilla FC for one year . The club had a purchase option for Boulahrouz for 8 million euros. His sporting situation did not improve there either. During the season he only made six appearances in the league (the last of which was on matchday 10), one in the national cup competition and one further each in Champions League qualification and group phase.

On July 21, 2008, Boulahrouz moved from Chelsea to VfB Stuttgart . After not always playing at VfB in the first seasons of 2008-2011 (never more than 21 games per season, long break from injury in 2009/10), he became a regular at the beginning of the 2011/12 season and scored on the 8th matchday (30 September 2011) in the 2-0 away win against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the 50th game for VfB, his 102nd Bundesliga game, his second Bundesliga goal.

On May 3, 2012, VfB Stuttgart announced that the contract with Boulahrouz, which expired on June 30, 2012, would not be extended.

On July 18, 2012, Khalid Boulahrouz signed a two-year contract with Sporting Lisbon with an option for another season. After he was only used eleven times in the league, he let the contract dissolve on September 2, 2013 in the hope of finding a new club for free. On October 7, 2013, the Danish first division club Brøndby IF signed him until the end of the 2013/14 season. Boulahrouz then returned to the Netherlands, where he signed an annual contract with Feyenoord with an option for another year. However, the option was not drawn.

After more than seven months without a club, he announced the end of his career in mid-February 2016.

National team

Boulahrouz with Marco van Basten

On September 3, 2004, Boulahrouz made his debut for the Dutch national team in a 3-0 win over Liechtenstein . At the 2006 World Cup he was used in all four games, but saw in the lost round of 16 after repeated foul play the yellow-red card . Also in the European Football Championship in 2008 , he was part of the squad of the Dutch and stood in all four games in the square. After the disappointing performance of the Netherlands at the European Football Championship 2012 , in which the team lost all three preliminary round matches , Boulahrouz retired from the national team following the resignation of Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk .

Private

Boulahrouz married Sabia Thele (née Engizek) of Turkish descent in December 2006 , who took his name. During the European Football Championship in 2008, his daughter, who was born three months prematurely, died one day after giving birth. In the following quarter-final game against Russia , in which Boulahrouz was in the starting line-up, the Dutch national team therefore played with a black ribbon .

In March 2010 the couple had another daughter, and a year later they had a son. The couple separated in early 2013.
