Cufré (after the end of the game) | ||||||||
Player of the Match: Michael Ballack (Germany) |
- Argentina lost a penalty shootout in a World Cup for the first time . Germany, on the other hand, also won the fourth penalty shoot-out in their World Cup history after 1982 (5: 4 picks up against France), 1986 (4: 1 picks up against Mexico) and 1990 (4: 3 picks up against England ) with only one miss (1982 by Uli Stielike ).
- José Pekerman (Argentina coach) announced his resignation a few minutes after the Albiceleste World Cup .
- Immediately after the game, there was a tussle on the field between the players and those responsible. This was caused by a kick by the Argentine reserve player Cufré against Mertesacker , whereupon the Argentine saw the red card. FIFA also initiated proceedings against Rodríguez , who hit Schweinsteiger in the neck during the scuffle. Cufré was suspended for 4 games, Rodríguez was suspended for 2 games.
- Frings was suspended for the semi-finals against Italy because of an assault as part of these scuffles against Cruz . He was also sentenced by FIFA to a fine of SFR 5,000 and another game suspension, which was suspended for half a year. The judgment is controversial despite the punch that can be seen on TV, on the one hand because Cruz told a newspaper that he had not noticed a blow, on the other hand because Frings was not reported by the Argentine side, but Italian media started the matter afterwards FIFA initially closed the investigation against German players.
- On the way back from the game to Frankfurt am Main , the Argentine soccer coach Antonio Mohamed was involved in a serious traffic accident on the A4 near Weimar , in which his nine-year-old son Faryd was fatally injured.
