  • "End stop Portugal": For the third time in a row, the Netherlands failed in a major tournament against Portugal. Already in the qualification for the 2002 World Cup, the end came, because you could not win the respective direct duels against Portugal (0: 2 and 2: 2) and Ireland (2: 2 and 0: 1) and thus as third in the group behind them Team was not qualified. At the 2004 European Championships, the Netherlands lost the semi-finals against Portugal 1: 2 and at the 2006 World Cup they lost the second round 0: 1.

He was the most successful goalscorer in World Cup history until July 8, 2014 , ahead of German Gerd Müller (14 goals) and French Just Fontaine (13) and was then surpassed by German Miroslav Klose . While Fontaine was only active in World Cups in 1958, Müller only in 1970 and 1974 and Klose in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014, Ronaldo was in the Brazilian national team for the fourth time since 1994, 1998 and 2002, but was not used in 1994 .

  • Argentina lost a penalty shootout in a World Cup for the first time . Germany, on the other hand, also won the fourth penalty shoot-out in their World Cup history after 1982 (5: 4 picks up against France), 1986 (4: 1 picks up against Mexico) and 1990 (4: 3 picks up against England ) with only one miss (1982 by Uli Stielike ).
  • José Pekerman (Argentina coach) announced his resignation a few minutes after the Albiceleste World Cup .
  • Immediately after the game, there was a tussle on the field between the players and those responsible. This was caused by a kick by the Argentine reserve player Cufré against Mertesacker , whereupon the Argentine saw the red card. FIFA also initiated proceedings against Rodríguez , who hit Schweinsteiger in the neck during the scuffle. Cufré was suspended for 4 games, Rodríguez was suspended for 2 games.
  • Frings was suspended for the semi-finals against Italy because of an assault as part of these scuffles against Cruz . He was also sentenced by FIFA to a fine of SFR 5,000 and another game suspension, which was suspended for half a year. The judgment is controversial despite the punch that can be seen on TV, on the one hand because Cruz told a newspaper that he had not noticed a blow, on the other hand because Frings was not reported by the Argentine side, but Italian media started the matter afterwards FIFA initially closed the investigation against German players.
  • On the way back from the game to Frankfurt am Main , the Argentine soccer coach Antonio Mohamed was involved in a serious traffic accident on the A4 near Weimar , in which his nine-year-old son Faryd was fatally injured.

  • For the first time since 1978 there was a final in which neither Brazil nor Germany stood.
  • For the first time since 1982 there was a final in which two European teams faced each other.
  • After 1994, it was the second time in World Cup history that a world championship title was decided by a penalty shoot-out.
  • Elizondo was the first referee in World Cup history to appear in both the opening game and the final.
  • It was the first penalty shoot-out won by the Italians at a World Cup.
  • It was the first World Cup game in which a player was expelled from the field although neither the referee nor his assistants (but the 4th referee) had noticed the previous assault.
