Marco Streller (born June 18, 1981 in Basel ) is a former Swiss football player who was used in the storm . Since June 2017 he has been a member of the board of the FC Basel and since February 2020 a football expert at the Swiss pay broadcaster Teleclub . After his active career, he took over the office of sports director at FC Basel in June 2017 , but resigned on June 14, 2019 with immediate effect.

As a player in the club

Basel, Concordia, Thun

Streller played in his youth at FC Aesch and FC Arlesheim. He started his professional career in 2000 at FC Basel when he was used once under coach Christian Gross . In the following season he was loaned to the Swiss second division club Concordia Basel , where he attracted attention with 16 goals in 30 games. Streller was then brought back from FC Basel, but after three missions in January 2002 in the National League B to FC Thun . For the 2003/04 season he returned to FC Basel, where he scored 13 goals in 16 games.

Stuttgart, Cologne

With this achievement he aroused the interest of some clubs in the German Bundesliga . Streller finally signed a four-year contract with VfB Stuttgart , for an estimated transfer fee of three million euros. Streller scored his first Bundesliga goal on March 14, 2004 in his first game in the VfB starting line-up against 1860 Munich in the 35th minute. Stopped by a serious injury, he lost his regular place with the Swabians . Until then he had played 28 Bundesliga appearances and scored 3 goals. In order to give him more playing practice again, the VfB officials decided to loan him out.

On January 11, 2006, the striker was loaned to 1. FC Köln , but returned to VfB for the 2006/07 season , with whom he was German champion this season . Since he was mostly just a substitute player in Stuttgart, Streller decided to return to FC Basel for the 2007/08 season .

Basel

Streller found his old strength in Basel and scored 12 goals in 23 games in his first season after his return from Germany. At the end of the season he had won both the championship and the cup competition with FC Basel and thus the double . But he also struggled with injuries in Basel and was therefore unable to play all the games in the second half of the season.

In the seasons 2009/10 and 2010/11 Marco Streller was again Swiss champion with FC Basel.

From the 2011/12 season Marco Streller was the new captain of FC Basel, replacing Franco Costanzo , who had left the club. At the end of the season, Streller became Swiss champions again with FC Basel.

At the end of the 2012/13 season , Streller became Swiss champions for the sixth time with FC Basel and the team reached the cup final , which they only lost in the penalty shoot-out. In the UEFA Europa League 2012/13 he made it to the semi-finals with FC Basel, where he played against the reigning UEFA Champions League winner FC Chelsea . In the years 2003-2011 Marco Streller was a striker in the Swiss national team .

Before a test match between the national team and Germany , Streller was seriously injured in training, broke his shin and fibula and fell out for a long time.

In the last qualifying game for the 2006 World Cup on November 16, 2005, Streller scored the decisive second goal in the barge game against the Turkish national team for his home country after he had previously owed a penalty . After retiring from active elite sport in spring 2015, he worked for Swiss radio and television as an expert on broadcasts of the Champions League from August 2015 to May 2017 .
