Vladimir Petković (born August 15, 1963 in Sarajevo , SR Bosnia and Herzegovina , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Bosnian - Croatian football player and current coach , who also has Swiss citizenship . He has been coaching the Swiss national team since 2014 .

Career as a player

As a player, the Bosnian Croat Petković was under contract with FK Sarajevo . From 1987 he played at various clubs in Switzerland, including FC Sion and AC Bellinzona . In 1999 he ended his active career at SC Buochs ​​and became a coach.

Career as a coach

As a coach, he was responsible for the Ticino clubs Malcantone Agno and AC Bellinzona . The latter he led in the 2007/08 season in the Swiss Cup final and rose to the top Swiss league. From August 10, 2008 to May 8, 2011 he was the head coach of BSC Young Boys . After YB was eliminated prematurely in the UEFA Europa League as well as in the Swiss Cup and most recently in the title race for the Swiss championship , Petković was released in May 2011.

In June 2011 he signed a two-year contract with the promoted team in the Turkish Süper Lig , Samsunspor . There he was released on January 23, 2012 for failure. In May 2012, Petković signed an annual contract as head coach at FC Sion with an option for another year. For the 2012/13 season , Petković moved to the Italian first division club Lazio Rome , where he received a two-year contract. After winning the Italian Cup with Lazio in his first season , his contract was extended until June 30, 2015.

Swiss national team

Despite an ongoing contract with Lazio Rome, Petković negotiated in secret with the Swiss Football Association in autumn 2013 about an engagement after the end of his contractual term with Lazio. When this became known to the Italian authorities, he was released by Lazio on January 4, 2014.

After the 2014 World Cup , Petković took over the Swiss national football team as the successor to Ottmar Hitzfeld . He signed a contract until the end of 2015. Since Switzerland had qualified for the UEFA Euro 2016 at that time , the contract was extended until after the final round. In August 2017, the Swiss Football Association extended the current contract early until 2020.

Personal

Petković has both Bosnian citizenship and Croatian citizenship and Swiss citizenship. In addition to his mother tongue Croatian , Bosnian and Serbo-Croatian, he also speaks German , Italian , Russian , French , Spanish and English .
