Club history
1921 to 1994
FC Lugano entered the national limelight for the first time when they won 1-0 and 3-0 in the promotion games against FC Neumünster Zurich at the end of the 1921/22 season and thus for the first time in the top division of the time, in three regional groups subdivided Serie A rise. After the first season, the Ticino were in last place in the eastern group, but did not go down because of the increase in the league from eight to nine teams. In the next two game years, the penultimate places in front of the FC Blue Stars Zurich and Brühl St. Gallen were enough to secure relegation.
From 1926/27 , FC Lugano was finally one of the top clubs in the Eastern Group and after the 1929/30 season , the Ticino team, after finishing second in the group for the second time in a row, were also allowed to take part in the national finals for the first time Participate in the championship without leaving a lasting impression there.
FC Lugano did this all the more in the following season's cup competition. There, the black-and-whites won the final against the Zurich Grasshopper Club - one of the leading Swiss clubs of that era - 2: 1 and thus won their first national title.
In 1933 Lugano became a founding member of the new single-track top division in Switzerland, the National League A, where he took a good third place in the final accounts. In the following years the Ticino were also one of the leading clubs in the league and they were even allowed to celebrate the championship for the first time in 1938 when the Grasshoppers were one point behind. The second coup followed in 1941 , when FC Lugano this time left the Bernese sports club Young Boys two points behind.
In the next few years, the Luganer remained among the leading teams in the National League A. After the worst placement until then - 11th place among 14 clubs - had to be accepted in the 1947/48 season , the Ticino were able to hold their third and last championship in the following season celebrate the club's history. Second placed FC Basel was left seven points behind.
In the following years, however, FC Lugano increasingly slipped into midfield and below. At the end of the 1952/53 season, FC Lugano was tied with FC Grenchen in penultimate place. In the required relegation playoff game, the club clearly lost 3-0 to Solothurn and was therefore not first class for the first time in over thirty years.
A year later they rose again to the National League A and were able to hold up in the top division until 1959/60 . In the early 1960s, FC Lugano was a typical lift team. 1960/61 you played for a year in the NLB and managed to get promoted again. However, after the 1962/63 season, FC Lugano rose again to the NLB and rose again in 1963/64 .
It was not until the end of the 1960s that FC Lugano was one of the best Swiss football teams again. In 1968 they won the Swiss Cup in the final against FC Winterthur 2-1. It was her first title since winning the Swiss championship in 1949 and it was celebrated accordingly. In 1971 they reached the cup final again but lost the game against Servette Geneva 2-0.
Weaker years followed and in 1976 they went back to the NLB. A short promotion to the NLA was successful in 1978/79, but after only one year they relegated.
Only with the rise in 1987/88 did a more successful period follow. The last title win for the time being came in 1993 when Lugano again won the Swiss Cup against the Grasshoppers 4-1 after they had lost the final against FC Luzern 2-1 after extra time a year earlier.
It was their third cup win and FC Lugano is still the only Ticino football team that has ever won the Swiss Cup.
1995/96
FC Lugano made in the UEFA Cup - 1995/96 for a sensation when he the Italian giants in the first round of the competition Inter Milan in the San Siro with 1: could defeat 0 after the first leg 1: 1 had gone out. In the next round there was no wonder and after two narrow defeats against Slavia Prague the end followed.
2002 to 2004
In June 2002 it was announced that FC Lugano would not get a license for the coming 2002/03 season due to financial problems after finishing the previous season in 2nd place. This was followed by the forced relegation to the second division of the National League B . In March 2002, the incumbent club president Helios Jermini committed suicide. As a trustee, he had embezzled a total of 61 million francs in customer funds since 1983 , 45 million of which flowed into the club's coffers. At the end of 2002, claims against the association in inheritance proceedings increased to over CHF 103 million. In March 2003, the debt restructuring agreement with the association's creditors did not materialize. Over 100 creditors would have waived their claims, but an agreement could not be reached with two finance companies, which made claims totaling 26 million. The club, which was in debt with 73.5 million francs, went bankrupt . AC Lugano, which emerged from bankruptcy, entered the 2003/04 season in what was then the fourth-highest division, the second interregional league . At the same time, plans became known that they would merge with FC Malcantone Agno by the summer of 2004 .
On July 1, 2004, the remnants of the insolvent FC Lugano merged with the club FC Malcantone Agno , also from Ticino - which came fourth in the second Swiss league, the Challenge League - to form AC Lugano. On June 24, 2008, the club name was changed back to FC Lugano in time for the 100th anniversary of AC Lugano. There is a museum in memory of the bankrupt association.
2008 to 2010
