Christian Eduardo Giménez [ xiˈmenes ] (born November 13, 1974 in Buenos Aires ) is a former Argentine football player who also has Italian nationality. He held the position of a striker .
Career
Giménez began his professional career at Club Atlético San Miguel and moved to Boca Juniors in 1995 . In 1997 he signed with the Swiss club FC Lugano , where he made his breakthrough. From August 2001 to August 2005 he played for FC Basel , where he won the Swiss championship in 2002, 2004 and 2005, and the Swiss Cup in 2002 and 2003. He was also the top scorer in the Super League in 2001, 2002 and 2005 . In the 2002/03 season he took part in the UEFA Champions League with FC Basel , where he scored a total of five goals for Basel.
In August 2005 he was dismissed from FC Basel because he wanted to provoke his planned move to France with a strike , whereupon he was to move to Olympique Marseille a little later for the transfer fee of 700,000 euros . In Marseille, however, he was demoted to a substitute player after just a few games by the undisputed star he was at FC Basel.
On August 4, 2006, the Bundesliga club Hertha BSC announced that Giménez was signed as a new striker, succeeding Marcelinho , on loan from Marseille. In the event that Giménez should prove himself at Hertha BSC, Hertha had the option to take over the player entirely at the end of the 2006/07 season for € 1,000,000. On April 12, 2007 - three days before the option expired - Hertha announced that it wanted to draw the option for Giménez and thus pay the required transfer fee to Marseille. At the same time, the contract with the player was extended to 2009. On September 17, 2006, the Argentine Hertha BSC scored two goals against FC Schalke 04 to become the leader of the table of the first Bundesliga.
On July 31, 2007, Giménez 'transfer to the Mexican club Deportivo Toluca was announced.
After a stopover at the Greek club Skoda Xanthi , which loaned him in early 2009, he moved back to Switzerland, this time to the Ticino second division club FC Locarno , where he scored six goals in 10 league games by the end of the season. The club qualified as 15th in the final table for the third division.
After several months without a club, the Argentine first division club Chacarita Juniors announced the commitment of Giménez in early 2010 , where he soon ended his career.
