Xanthi FC is a football club from western Thrace in the northern Greek city of Xanthi , which was called Skoda Xanthi FC between 1991 and 2016 .
history
Founded in 1967 through the merger of the previously rival clubs Aspida and Orfeas, AO Xanthi made it to the first Greek football league in 1989. In 1991, VIAMAR SA , the official importer of Škoda vehicles, took over the majority of the club's shares. Since then the club has been called Skoda Xanthi FC. In 2002 they finally took part in the UEFA Cup , in which they failed in the first round at Lazio Rome . The club also took part in European competitions in the 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2013/14 seasons. So far the best placement in the Greek elite class was 4th place in the 2004/05 season. Hannes Bongartz , former coach at the German soccer clubs SG Wattenscheid 09 , 1. FC Kaiserslautern , Borussia Mönchengladbach and MSV Duisburg , was the sports director at Skoda Xanthi FC from 2007 to 2008.
