Gymnastikos Syllogos Apollon Smyrnis ( Greek Γυμναστικός Σύλλογος Απόλλων Σμύρνης ) is a Greek football club from Athens , and is one of the oldest clubs in Greece.
history
The club was founded in 1891 by members of the Orpheus club in Smyrna , which had been founded a year earlier , and was named after the sun god Apollon . The colors chosen were blue and white, analogous to the Greek flag. The first stadium was acquired in 1894 and a football department was established in 1910.
After the war in 1922 they moved to Athens. There the club acquired its new stadium. Apollon stayed there for about 25 years. After the Second World War, the Georgios Kamaras Stadium was built in 1948 , the new home of the club.
The mid-1990s was the most successful period. In the 1994/95 season they qualified by a 4th place in the league for the UEFA Cup and a year later the team reached the cup final , which was lost 7-1 to AEK Athens .
A few years later the fame had faded. In 1994/95 the club was relegated to the 2nd division , 2005 to the 3rd division and 2007 to the 4th division . In the following years the club stabilized in terms of sport and returned to the 2nd division in 2012. As a second division champion, the march into the Superleague followed in the 2012/13 season, from which Apollon immediately relegated. In 2017 the club became champions again and returned to the first division.
